HIGHLIGHTS

  • A legendary fighter's promo may have just added six figures to this card's viewership numbers.
  • The lineal heavyweight championship of the world is on the line, and most people haven't realized it yet.
  • One fighter has everything to gain and almost nothing to lose, which might make her the most dangerous person on the card.

The main headliners for the first-ever Netflix MMA event took center stage again on Wednesday in Los Angeles at the Intuit Dome. Ronda Rousey stole the show with a rant that was born from years of listening to Dana White and her experience in WWE. The result was pure gold and probably a few hundred thousand more viewers than were already going to watch the epic event.

In case you missed Rousey's tour de force on the mic, which was aimed squarely at the forehead of UFC women's bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison, here it is along with Harrison's basic, but business-like response.

Here’s a look at the full card which is set for Saturday, May 16 on Netflix.

Main Card

  • Ronda Rousey (12–2) vs. Gina Carano (7–1) — Featherweight, 5 x 5 (Main Event)
  • Francis Ngannou (18–3) vs. Philipe Lins (18–5) — Heavyweight
  • Nate Diaz (22–13) vs. Mike Perry (14–8) — Welterweight, 5 x 5
  • Salahdine Parnasse (22–2) vs. Kenneth Cross (17–4) — Lightweight
  • Junior dos Santos (21–10) vs. Robelis Despaigne (5–2) — Heavyweight
  • Muhammad Mokaev (15–0) vs. Adriano Moraes (21–6) — Flyweight

Undercard

  • Namo Fazil (9–1) vs. Jake Babian (6–1) — Welterweight
  • David Mgoyan (8–1) vs. Albert Morales (19–10–1) — Bantamweight/Featherweight
  • Aline Pereira (2–2) vs. Jade Masson-Wong (3–2) — 130-lb Catchweight
  • Chris Avila (8–9) vs. TBA — 165-lb Catchweight
  • Jason Jackson (19–6) vs. TBA — Welterweight (Lorenz Larkin withdrew with knee injury; Jackson still expects to compete)

What Should People Know About the Main Event?

The fight already had some built-in appeal because of the history and legacies of the two women in the main event. Rousey's promo took it to the next level. She has learned a lot about promotion and it appears she's ready, willing and able to build this fight and something meaningful on Netflix.

Rousey hasn't competed since her knockout loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in 2016, and Carano's last bout was back in 2009. The gap in ring time for both fighters is the obvious question heading in, but Rousey's mic work Wednesday answered the more important question — does this fight have the kind of heat that drives mainstream viewership.

The answer is yes, and the Dana White House announcement showed how much a single flashpoint moment can change the trajectory of an event’s buzz.

What Should People Know About the Undercard?

This is a serious undercard and as it is, it easily rivals UFC Freedom. That's not hyperbole or someone caught up in the moment. It's also not coming from someone who is new to this sport and combat sports in general. I've loved it for more than 30 years and covered it for more than a decade. This is a strong card and there's no need to grade it on a curve.

Francis Ngannou returns to MMA after his boxing detour and PFL run to face Philipe Lins in a heavyweight matchup with genuine stakes.

Nate Diaz and Mike Perry meet in a five-round welterweight war that seems almost engineered for chaos. JDS, Mokaev, Moraes, Parnasse, and Aline Pereira — sister of Alex Pereira — round out a lineup that punches well above the weight of most non-UFC events. Larkin's withdrawal with a knee injury is the one blemish, but Jackson still expects to compete against a replacement opponent.

What’s at Stake For Everyone Involved?

There's a lot at stake for everyone, including MVP. They'd love to partner with Rousey to build a legitimate competitor to the UFC. The success of this event will have a lot to do with how that pans out. Rousey needs to show she can still compete on a high level and back up her talk. Carano, quite honestly, has the least to prove. No one expects her to win, so she's already a winner by scoring this spot.

Francis Ngannou is still the baddest heavyweight in the world until someone proves otherwise in a cage or Octagon. He needs to beat Philipe Lins to maintain that distinction. After his stalled boxing career, it's the one thing that keeps him most relevant in combat sports.

Lins could claim the lineal heavyweight title — the only lineal title the UFC doesn't currently have control over — and that's a bigger deal than most acknowledge. If he wins, it wouldn't surprise me to see the UFC throw a serious offer his way. Nate Diaz needs to beat Perry to maintain his aura, or at least have a banger with Platinum — which seems like a given.

When you look at the platform this is providing for JDS, Despaigne, Parnasse, Mokaev, and Aline Pereira, this is an insane card with high stakes everywhere. As covered in the UFC 327 takeaways, the sport rewards cards that deliver — and MVP MMA 1 has the ingredients to do exactly that.
