Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is reportedly close to cutting funding for the LIV Golf league, according to reporting by the Financial Times. The move could spell the end of the LIV Golf league as Saudi Arabia aims to cut international investment of it’s sovereign wealth fund, also known as the PIF, from 30% down to 20% under a new five-year strategy, refocusing some of that money domestically back to Saudi Arabia.
Speculation about the future of LIV Golf began Tuesday, April 14 after Ryan French, a golf insider who runs the Monday Q Info account, posted a message on X that stated “I’ve heard from multiple sources that a bombshell announcement on LIVs future is imminent.” The rumors preceded an announcement that LIV Golf League executives had been called to an emergency meeting in New York on Wednesday, April 15 following claims that the Saudi Public Investment Fund -backed golf league is under threat of shutting down.
Meanwhile, LIV Golf continues to prepare to play its Mexico City event April 16-19. As reported by Telegraph Sport, LIV bosses were called to New York for the emergency meeting and no executives from LIV Golf were in Mexico City Wednesday for the tournament.

The uncertainty about the future of the LIV Golf league arrives just days after the conclusion of The Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters was a disappointing performance for LIV Golf. Ten players from LIV Golf played but only five made the cut. Notably, LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau was one of the LIV golfers who did not make the cut. Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm, and Charl Schwartzel did make the cut to play during the weekend.
LIV had enjoyed a successful event in South Africa back in March, with LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau ultimately winning the tournament. LIV announced it had sold more than 90,000 tickets for the South Africa event.
PIF’s cumulative investment in LIV Golf will exceed $6 billion by the end of 2026, according to a Money in Sport article from February 2026. In 2026, LIV Golf moved from a 54-hole tournament to 72 holes, similar to other major golf tours, while retaining its team-golf aspect.
Moreover, LIV Golf still struggles to gain credibility as TV audiences continue to elude and disappoint. The high-profile departures of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed following the 2025 season have only exacerbated the league’s struggles.
It remains unclear what will happen with the remainder of the LIV Golf players. However, there is precedent to follow with respect to how Patrick Reed has been treated. Ex-LIV golfers could be required to sit out one year from their last LIV Golf start, at which point they may be eligible to return to the PGA Tour based on prior or current earned status.
