The FIFA World Cup is barely a week old, yet a familiar storyline is already dominating the tournament.

Lionel Messi scored a hat trick for Argentina against Algeria, while Kylian Mbappe struck twice for France versus Senegal, producing performances that not lifted their respective nations to victory. It also reignited the game’s most compelling individual rivalry.

For years, Messi and Mbappe have represented different eras of the game. One is the master craftsman nearing the end of a legendary career and the other an explosive superstar who appears destined to define the next decade.

But after Tuesday’s matches, the conversation around this World Cup is no longer simply about Argentina’s title defense or France’s chances. It is about Messi versus Mbappe — again.

Messi’s hat trick was a reminder that age has done little to diminish his brilliance. At 39, the Argentine captain continues to dictate games with a calmness and intelligence that few players in history have possessed. He no longer relies on explosive acceleration to leave defenders behind. Instead, he controls matches through timing and an almost supernatural understanding of space.

Against Algeria, Messi was once again at the center of everything Argentina created. Every touch seemed purposeful and every pass measured. More importantly, he looked like a player fully aware that this tournament could represent one final opportunity to add another chapter to an already unmatched legacy.

In scoring three goals, Messi became tied with Miroslav Klose with the most goals ever scored in World Cup history with 16. In other words, Messi is rewriting the record books just as this tournament is getting started.

Mbappe Scores Twice

Only a few hours earlier, Mbappe had delivered a statement of his own. France’s 3-1 win over Senegal was built around the forward’s devastating combination of pace and finishing.

Mbappe’s two goals came in different fashions but carried the same message: He remains the most dangerous attacking player in the game.

Mbappe, too, is climbing the list of all time World Cup scorers. In fact, his performance against Senegal highlighted why many view him as the natural heir to Messi’s throne. Mbappe is now at 14 career World Cup goals.

The Frenchman has never hidden his ambition. He wants to be remembered among the game’s greatest players and World Cups provide the perfect stage to build that reputation. Tuesday’s brace was another reminder that he thrives under pressure.

What makes this developing World Cup narrative particularly intriguing is the history between the two men. Their connection extends beyond this tournament. They spent two seasons together at Paris Saint-Germain, sharing a dressing room while occupying different points in their careers. Messi arrived as an established icon with virtually nothing left to prove. Mbappe was the emerging superstar eager to establish himself.

Their relationship appeared respectful, but comparisons were inevitable. Every goal, assist and trophy was viewed through the lens of succession. Was the game still Messi’s or had Mbappe already taken over?

2022 World Cup Rivalry Renewed

The 2022 World Cup final only intensified this debate. Messi ultimately lifted the trophy after one of the greatest finals in history ended 3-3 (and won by Argentina in a shootout), yet Mbappe scored a stunning hat trick and nearly carried France to victory on his own.

Both players emerged with enhanced reputations. Messi completed his career collection and Mbappe confirmed that he could dominate during the biggest of occasions. Four years later, the rivalry has returned.

There are, of course, many outstanding players capable of shaping this World Cup. Other nations have stars capable of scoring goals, but no two players combine greatness and drama quite like Messi and Mbappe.

Every goal scored by one immediately increases the pressure on the other. At the same time, their countries are among the favorites to progress deep into the tournament, raising the possibility of another collision course in the knockout rounds.

Neither player is willing to surrender the spotlight. As the tournament progresses, tactics, team depth and defensive resilience will all matter. Championships are rarely won by individuals alone. But World Cup champions are also defined by iconic figures and unforgettable moments. Right now, Messi and Mbappe continue to do just that on American soil.
