The Chicago Cubs have spent much of the second half of the season reshaping their pitching staff after several setbacks and injuries.

But after Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera both were sidelined in succession, the team’s executives made a sudden move well before the trade deadline and acquired New York Mets’ reigning All-Star starter David Peterson.

Shortly after that move, two-time first-round pick, Tyler Beede, elected free agency after spending the first part of the season with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate.

Former First-Round Draft Pick Tyler Beede Leaves Chicago Cubs After Trade For David Peterson

"After spending the first few months of the season with the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Iowa, right-hander Tyler Beede has elected free agency,” Connor Byrne reported for MLB Trade Rumors. “Now 33 years old, Beede was a prospect of note in his younger days."

Beede was drafted 21st overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, but attended Vanderbilt University and re-entered the draft in 2014, going 14th overall to the San Francisco Giants.

He pitched in parts of major league seasons for the Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians, last reaching the majors in 2024. His stint with Triple-A Iowa never produced the results necessary for a call up with the Cubs.

"Unless Iowa re-signs him, that will go down as his last outing with the team,” Byrne added.
“Over 13 appearances and 22 2/3 innings with the club, Beede pitched to an unsightly 12.71 ERA while allowing 33 hits and posting 22 strikeouts against 18 walks. The Cubs' pitching staff has dealt with a rash of injuries at the MLB level this year, but Beede clearly did not perform well enough to merit another big league look. He is now back on the market."

Chicago Cubs Opt For Veteran New York Mets Star

It wasn’t immediately clear if Beede exited his contract via an opt out, but it seems possible that he decided he’d try to make a big-league comeback elsewhere after the Peterson trade.

”Shortly after getting swept in a doubleheader by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, the Mets traded David Peterson to the Cubs, sending the left-hander to the visitor's locker room for minor league prospect Cole Mathis,” Robert Sanchez wrote for SNY. “Manager Carlos Mendoza spoke about the trade before the series finale between the two teams on Thursday and was sad to see Peterson, who was in his seventh season playing for New York, go."

While Peterson is expected to help strengthen Chicago's major league rotation, Beede will now search for another opportunity elsewhere after his difficult stint with Iowa. For the Cubs, the pair of moves reflects an ongoing effort to maximize their pitching depth as they continue chasing a postseason berth.
