The Toronto Blue Jays have had to undergo some roster shuffling as their offseason of acquisition quickly devolved into a scramble for healthy arms.
The team acquired Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce this winter and reunited with Max Scherzer, but it recently had to sign veteran hurler Patrick Corbin to a one-year, $1 million contract as unfortunate injuries pile up.
“The beat-up American League champs fired up the transaction wire again on Tuesday, bringing in some starting pitching help while sending another position player to the injured list,” Rob Longley wrote for the Toronto Sun. “Prior to Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced that lefty Patrick Corbin has been called up from class-A Dunedin and was to be active for the game. Corbin is expected to report to Toronto on Wednesday and is slated to start Friday’s game against the Twins.”

Corbin was available as a last minute option following a middling 2025 campaign with the Texas Rangers that saw him post a 4.40 ERA in 30 starts. However, he has enjoyed some standout seasons in the big leagues, including two All-Star appearances while a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
But beyond serving as an answer to the team’s injury woes and his strong resume, Corbin also received some attention for his off-field decisions ahead of his debut on Friday.
“Corbin, who has been a vocal supporter of United States President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, will at least get a winnable matchup in his season debut,” the Toronto Star’s Gregor Chisholm wrote ahead of his debut against the rebuilding Minnesota Twins.
It isn’t typical for the press covering the Blue Jays to single out a new player’s political views, but Corbin’s long history of supporting the U.S. president could be a notable factor for Blue Jays fans as they prepare to root for the newest member of the team.
