The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to sweep the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, taking a loss into their off day as they prepare for a series with the Cleveland Guardians.
But the team has seemed to gain a bit of positive momentum after early season injuries derailed the start of their season. And as the Blue Jays look to get back to their winning ways, it is starting to seem as if they are better off without long-time franchise shortstop Bo Bichette in the batting order, at least to open the season.
“Among the scouts who were curious — and some were quite skeptical — about the new-look (New York) Mets, there was one aspect of the rebuild that seemed pretty foolproof: Bo Bichette was going to hit,” Dan Martin wrote for the New York Post. “Maybe his play at third base wouldn’t be stellar, but the former shortstop was never known for his glove when he played for the Blue Jays, so why should that be the case with the Mets when he was at third? What was unexpected was the lack of offense.”

The Mets were able to snap their 12-game losing streak with a win on Wednesday. But even that victory came with a notable loss, as star infielder and de facto team captain Francisco Lindor left the game with a calf injury.
Lindor will undergo more testing on that injury on Thursday, but in the meantime it meant that Bichette returned to the position that brought him so much success in Toronto, at least briefly.
“Although Lindor will undergo an MRI on Thursday before a decision on his availability is made, it seems the Mets are preparing to lose their shortstop for some time,” Phillip Martinez wrote for SNY. “Bo Bichette moved over to shortstop with Lindor out, and that's the first-year Mets' natural position.”

But when asked if that could mark the new alignment moving forward without Lindor, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza offered a two-word response that suggested the team might be looking to keep Bichette at the hot corner and call up a new player, despite their struggles so far.
“We’ll see,” Mendoza said, per Martinez. “If it’s an IL, we’ll make a move… Who that person will be? I have to talk to David (Stearns) to see what we got with Lindor, then we’ll go from there. I won’t hesitate if I need to play Bo there, but I think we’ll bring someone here that is capable of playing the position as well."
As he adjusts to his new defensive role and the Mets short of expectations as a team, Bichette is slashing just .220/.255/.290, a significant step down from the .311/.357/.483 line he posted with the Blue Jays last year. Though the loss of Lindor for an extended period would be another major blow for the Mets, Bichette might have enjoyed the chance to return to shortstop.
However, that return seems unlikely, as the Mets remain committed to their alignment despite the losses.
