World Series - Los Angeles Dodgers v Toronto Blue Jays - Game 7

The Toronto Blue Jays suffered a harsh loss to the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, seeing a two-game win streak come to a halt and opening the door to the possibility of a fourth straight series loss.

The Blue Jays came into Opening Day with some high expectations and plenty of reason for optimism. And though it’s still early, it is fair to say that the results so far have been disappointing as the injuries pile up.

Going into Saturday’s game, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, Yimi Garcia, Bowden Francis, Anthony Santander, Cody Ponce, Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger were all injured. And by the end of the matchup, veteran slugger George Springer was added to that list.

“The extent of the injury — suffered when he fouled a pitch off his foot in the third — though he finished that at-bat, was still being determined after the game, as he underwent a CT scan to help determine a treatment plan,” Shi Davidi reported for Sportsnet. “But barring some surprise outcome, the injury is the latest blow for a team that’s already taken more than its share of them.”

Toronto Blue Jays Set To Replace George Springer With Nathan Lukes In Leadoff Spot

Without Barger, Santander or Springer available, the Blue Jays will be relying on Jesus Sanchez in right field, with Davis Schneider, Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes likely taking on bigger workloads as well. The team could also call up former Silver Slugger Award winner Eloy Jimenez from the minor leagues as a designated hitter replacement.

But in the batting order, Lukes appears to be the clear replacement option for Springer’s leadoff duties, at least against right-handed pitchers.

And as he’s mired in a .091/.160/.091 slump to start the season, Lukes offered a clear response about how he expects to handle that new role in Springer’s absence.

“Nothing changes,” Lukes said, according to the Toronto Star’s Mike Wilner.

Though the results he had hoped for at the plate this season haven’t been there so far, Lukes emphasized that he’s doing what he can to turn that around and that his process won’t change, even if he’s the new leadoff hitter.

“If they give it to me, I’m going to grind my (expletive) off,” Lukes added, per Wilner. “I’m grinding my (expletive) off right now and if they don’t give it to me, I’m still going to grind my (expletive) off… Results are not fun. Ball’s just not landing. It sucks, but it’ll turn around.”

Lukes enjoyed an impressive playoff run last year, which included nine hits and three runs in seven games during the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners. Perhaps now, with the added pressure of filling in for Springer, he’ll be able to return to that level with the Blue Jays looking to turn their early season results around.
