Randy Orton Kicks Off SmackDown

  • Before the show, Nick Aldis told both Cody Rhodes and Jelly Roll that Pat McAfee was not in the building yet, but neither could touch McAfee. This instruction “came from above,” with the implication being The Rock and/or Ari Emanuel.
  • Rhea Ripley said Jade Cargill made it personal with her kendo stick attack on Iyo on WWE Raw. Ripley was interrupted by Iyo Sky. Rhea questioned why Iyo was here given her physical condition. Iyo said she understood that Rhea was upset, but so was she.
  • Iyo Sky challenged Jade Cargill for a match tonight. SmackDown GM Nick Aldis (who was heavily booed) appeared live and confirmed the match for tonight. Rhea looked concerned for Iyo. She should be.

Alexa Bliss Def. Bayley

  • Fans exploded for Bayley, especially when she was announced from San Jose, Calif. When the bell rang, Bayley and Alexa waited for a “Bayley” chant. Instead, fans “woo’d” in honor of Charlotte Flair, who was ringside. After more waiting, fans finally started chanting for Bayley.
  • Alexa Bliss mocked Lyra Valkyria’s infamous dance in her platform moves. Charlotte distracted Bayley, which led to a rollup from Alexa and yet another win over Bayley in her hometown around this time in 2017.
  • Backstage, Trick Williams consoled Melo, who was in the training room. Lil Yachty, wearing a gingerbread man t-shirt, was mockingly selling a knee injury to mock Melo. These two were definitely heels. This led to Matt Cardona challenging Williams to a match for tonight.

Royce Keys Def. Berto

MORE FOR YOU

  • Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett put over Royce Keys’ power and presence as he entered the ring and tangled with Berto. The East Palo Alto native received a nice pop from the San Jose crowd.
  • Keys did a good job endearing himself to the crowd in between moves and getting himself over as a babyface immediately. Berto and Angel used heel tactics to 2v1 Keys as Berto took advantage.
  • Fans booed Berto as he took control of the match. Keys caught Berto in midair and hit a fallaway slam followed by a running powerslam. Keys hit a splash in the corner as Angel rushed Royce from the apron. Royce cut off Angel and hit a spinebuster for the win. A great presentation and everybody involved played their role to perfection.
  • Keys cut a great babyface promo backstage about the Bay Area. He was congratulated by Bay Area’s own Solo Sikoa.

Match Grade: B

Pat McAfee Responds To Cody Rhodes And CM Punk

  • McAfee was booed heavily before he even began his promo with “San Jose? What a s—thole.” McAfee declared himself the hero in this entire story. McAfee dissed “spineless bums” like CM Punk—whom fans chanted for. McAfee called out Punk for making fun of people a lot more “famous and in better shape” than him while wearing WWE-licensed merchandise.
  • McAfee called Punk a fraud and said Punk’s merch checks don’t go into the accounts of needy families too poor to afford WrestleMania tickets, but rather an account that says “I’m sorry Saudi Arabia.” Pat claimed to be everything CM Punk said he was.
  • “If it wasn’t for Randy Orton, why would anybody spend their money to watch WrestleMania?” said heel McAfee as he threatened to slap an overweight fan. McAfee called Ram Trucks. He gave a 25% off discount for all WrestleMania from now until WWE Raw. Was this his massive surprise? McAfee discouraged fans from buying tickets to Night 2, and instead told them to buy tickets to WrestleMania Saturday.
  • Cody Rhodes interrupted McAfee to a babyface reaction. Cody can’t touch McAfee, so Pat had fun with it by taunting Rhodes. Cody told Pat “I don’t think you belong here.” Cody took up for wrestling fans, who aren’t marks or customers. They’re family. Cody started a “Go home, Pat!”
  • McAfee called Cody a fake, cosplay champion. Pat said he had a message for Cody and his inbred family: If Randy Orton doesn’t walk out of WrestleMania as a 15-time world champion, you will never see or hear from McAfee ever again. This led to another “Go home, Pat” chant.
  • Cody mocked Pat for past comments saying he left WWE because he was “tired.” Then he reminded McAfee of Gunther choking him out. Pat responded by calling Cody “Stardust” and mocking him for being “deep in Triple H’s ass.”
  • Randy Orton appeared onscreen over an injured Jelly Roll and dragged him to the ring. Orton and McAfee 2v1’d Cody and finished off Jelly Roll. The two absconded with the WWE Championship and left San Jose.

Jacob Fatu Def. Tama Tonga

  • Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga stalemated early. The crowd was firmly behind Fatu as he went back-and-forth with Tonga on strikes. Fatu built up a head of steam to charge at Tonga in the corner, but he was cut off with a dropkick from a resilient Tama Tonga.
  • Tonga went for the Cutthroat, but Fatu caught him with a popup Samoan Drop followed by a double-jump moonsault for the win. After the match, Fatu began to cut a victory promo, but was attacked by Drew McIntyre, who made deeply personal insults during a vignetter earlier.
  • Fatu fought back, but Drew hit a Claymore Kick on the war-torn Fatu. McIntyre struck Fatu with a steel chair followed by a Future Shock DDT on the floor. Drew handcuffed Fatu and pulled him headfirst into the post. McIntyre handcuffed Fatu to the turnbuckle and busted him open. The cuffs broke as Fatu Fell to the floor, but McIntyre re-handcuffed him to the post. Fatu was again un-cuffed after a boot to the jaw.
  • Drew finished off Fatu with a Claymore Kick while his hands were cuffed behind his back. Drew then whipped Fatu with a belt.

Match Grade: B-

Trick Williams (Feat. Lil Yachty) Def. Matt Cardona

  • Trick Williams cut a mostly babyface promo on Sami Zayn and ended on “everybody loves Trick Williams.” Sami Zayn tried to interject and was booed soundly.
  • Sami said he’d drag Trick into the deep waters, and that fans only had a “crush” on him due to his entrance and gimmicks. Lil Yachty fired back by saying material items don’t make Trick Williams, Trick Williams makes Trick Williams.
  • The heel Sami Zayn sat ringside as the tweener Trick Williams wrestled babyface Matt Cardona. Cardona sold his Pillmanized wrist. Lil Yachty got involved, hitting Cardona when the referee was attending to Trick.
  • Trick and Sami faced off on the outside. Lil Yachty confronted Sami, but Sami blasted Yachty with the Helluva Kick. A distracted Williams was rolled up for the nearfall, but Trick recovered with a Trick Knee for the win.

Match Grade: B+

Danhausen Def. Kit Wilson

  • Referee Dan Engler, the referee who was cursed last week, officiated Danhausen’s in-ring debut. Danhausen hit an early Northern Lights suplex for a two count. He celebrated like he just won the main event of WrestleMania.
  • Kit Wilson screamed at Danhausen that the curse wasn’t real as he pummeled the popular face-painted star. Wilson went to the top, but Danhausen cursed Wilson, leading to a pyro explosion on the post. Danhausen hit a Bicycle Kick for the win.

Match Grade: B-

Jade Cargill Def. Iyo Sky

  • Backstage, Rhea Ripley laid out both B-Fab and Michin with a kendo stick. Iyo was pleased, but asked Rhea to stay backstage. No distractions. Iyo Sky sold her left arm and her ribs amid a clash with Cargill.
  • Iyo came out of the brakes quickly, but was promptly flattened by Cargill with a shoulder tackle and a suplex. Sky came back with a popup dropkick to Jade followed by her vaunted suicide dive. Jade cut Iyo off with a right hand, pre-launch. Jade rag-dolled Iyo around the ring during the picture-in-picture.
  • Iyo Sky came alive with a comeback punctuated by a running dropkick and a bullet train attack. Iyo went for the Over the Moonsault, but favored her arm long enough for Jade to chop her down. Jade setup Iyo in a gorilla press position, but Iyo countered with a rear-naked choke.
  • Fans rallied behind Iyo as Jade hit a Blue Thunder Bomb. Jade started talking trash and paid for it as Iyo hit a double-stomp on her stomach. Iyo followed up with a Suicide Dive. Jade smashed Iyo’s head against the steel steps followed by a pump kick. Jade hit Jaded for the win two minutes after the hour.
  • After the match, Rhea Ripley hit the ring and faced off with Jade Cargill. Jade walked out as fans booed to end the show. A very good setup for their anticipated women’s championship match.
