HIGHLIGHTS

  • A WWE icon walked away from the ring without saying a word — and the silence said everything.
  • The next big thing in WWE may have just earned the credibility stamp that fast-tracks him to a world championship.
  • An old-school retirement ritual returned to a WrestleMania main card for the first time in years.

The WWE believes in Oba Femi, and if you didn't know it before Sunday, you should know it now. Oba Femi delivered a one-sided beatdown to Brock Lesnar on Night 2 of WrestleMania 42, and the combat sports and WWE legend left his gloves and boots in the ring signaling retirement.

It was a bit of a shock, but there had been rumors Lesnar would hang them up this year. When you think about the roll he's on, the following and the push Femi is in the midst of, it all makes sense.

How Oba Femi Beat Brock Lesnar

Femi's win was dominant with Lesnar's offense either being no-sold or quickly recovered from. In fact, the finishing sequence happened after Femi quickly recovered from an F5. He then hit a chokeslam and Fall from Grace. Lesnar did not kick out. It was over that quick.

That kind of clean finish over The Beast doesn’t happen by accident — it was clearly mapped out in advance, the same way WWE staged the rest of WrestleMania 42's biggest surprise moments.

MORE FOR YOU

What the Boots in the Ring Signaled?

Rather than having a retirement tour and promoted last match like John Cena and AJ Styles (sort of), Lesnar wrote his own ticket here. He chose to retire in a way that is more similar to the UFC. That's appropriate because of his history in MMA. Gloves off is MMA. Boots off is more of a wrestling thing, but both signaling, "I'm done."

It’s the kind of moment that feels engineered for the WrestleMania 42 weekend recap — quiet, deliberate, and unmistakable.

Why Would This Was the Right Time for Lesnar to Walk Away?

Lesnar is 49 years old, which isn't ancient in WWE. Still, he's been around so long and done so much in WWE, it makes sense. Lesnar was also a part of the focus on Janel Grant's law suit against Vince McMahon, WWE and many of its associates. WWE brought Lesnar back last year for Wrestlepalooza, but it was clear he wouldn't back for a long-term run.

Going out on a clean loss to a rising star is the textbook way for a top draw to exit, and it gives WWE a story-rich sendoff whether or not the company ever puts the word "retirement" in a press release. However, there is some speculation that Lesnar may not be retired as of yet. There’s still potentially a storyline to pursue with Gunther, who has been the resident legend-retiring WWE Superstar.

If nothing else, the end is definitely near for Lesnar.

What’s Next for Oba Femi?

Femi is truly the next big thing in WWE. He has an unprecedented rocket strapped to his back. The WWE or World Heavyweight Championship scene is next for him. It would be surprising to me if he isn't a champion before the end of the year.

The path likely runs through whichever world champion is left standing after WrestleMania 42’s title scene shakes out. Pinning Lesnar clean is the kind of credit that doesn't sit on a shelf.
