The card for WWE Backlash is set. Friday's episode of SmackDown will only add the window dressing to an event that could be far more pivotal on the overall landscape than people expect. Could Roman Reigns drop the title to Jacob Fatu? Will Trick Williams' U.S. title reign be short-lived?
Are there surprises in store for Seth Rollins or Bron Breakker? Who will Danhausen's mystery partner be? Will Asuka vs. IYO SKY steal the show?
There's quite a few questions. Here's everything you need to know about Saturday's premium live event.
WWE creative locked in five matches for Tampa, headlined by Reigns' first World Heavyweight Title defense against his cousin. The full card:

The biggest creative through-line is Bloodline storytelling. WWE's booking has Fatu positioned as the most credible challenger Reigns has faced in his return to the main event scene, with the Tongan Death Grip being established as the in-ring hook of the program. The U.S. title triple threat was updated late after Carmelo Hayes worked his way into the picture on SmackDown.
Backlash 2026 takes place Saturday, May 9, 2026, from Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. The main card kicks off at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. PT, with WWE's standard pre-show expected to lead in.
This is the first WWE premium live event after WrestleMania 42, and it's the first major test of WWE's new ESPN Unlimited deal in the United States. Doors at the venue open earlier in the afternoon for in-arena fans, but TV bell time is 7 p.m. ET sharp.
In the United States, Backlash streams on ESPN Unlimited for $29.99 per month, accessible via the ESPN App on smart TVs, mobile, and consoles, plus the ESPN on Disney+ tier through the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Unlimited bundle. Cable and live TV bundles that carry ESPN — including Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV Stream, and Spectrum — also unlock access through authenticated logins.
Internationally, Netflix carries Backlash live in the U.K., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, most of Western Europe, and large portions of Asia and the Middle East. Sub-Saharan Africa gets the show on SuperSport, and Japan via Abema. Replays land on demand on the same platforms shortly after the live broadcast wraps.
The booking variable that matters most is whether WWE creative uses Backlash to extend Fatu's chase or pull a swerve. CBS Sports and Wrestling Inc. both have Reigns retaining as the consensus pick, in part because Reigns has held the World Heavyweight Title for less than a month and the company rarely cuts a champion that early.
The other major X-factor is Danhausen's mystery partner. Speculation has centered on a major name given how much creative real estate WWE has spent on the reveal, and the right pop could elevate what's otherwise the lightest-stakes match on the card into the show's most-discussed moment.
