Cornucopian moved a step closer to the Breeders'Cup with a win in the Aristides stakes at Churchill Downs

The final leg of the Triple Crown races for three-year-olds is coming, but the race for the Breeders’ Cup is just beginning. The Bob Baffert-trained Cornucopian took a huge step forward towards those year-end World Championship races with an impressive win in the Aristides Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Aristides Win Shows Development For Cornucopian

A son of Into Mischief, Cornucopian has always been highly regarded. Since winning the initial start of his career by 5 ¾ lengths at Oaklawn Park, big things were expected from this Kentucky-bred. After being thrown into the deep waters of the 2025 Arkansas Derby in just the second start of his career, where he finished a respectable fourth after setting a sizzling pace, this grandson of Distorted Humor ran just once more as a three-year old (second place finish at Aqueduct). As is the case with many young athletes, time and training have allowed him to figure some things out. Coming into the Aristides (a race named for the first Kentucky Derby winner) off two wins in three starts this year, Baffert’s blossoming four-year-old would certainly be put to the test against a solid field. Breaking alertly under jockey Flavien Prat, Cornucopian was right there contesting a hot opening half mile (22.20 opening quarter, 44.93 half mile) in this six-furlong (3/4 of a mile) sprint. Muscling to the lead and flexing towards the finish, those fast early fractions were no factor as he repelled the vastly more experienced Roll On Big Joe (25 lifetime starts, 19 top three finishes) and finished a strong length and a quarter to the good.

“Those early fractions were slow by California time”, smiles Bob Baffert. “He’s very talented but has been a little green. We might have rushed him a little bit last year but he was very professional in this race. He switched leads like he was supposed to and finished like a good horse does. We have always expected big things because he broke his maiden at Oaklawn with real brilliance.”

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Might Be In The Cornucopian Future

The natural thing that happens in the 21^st century sports world is to think about what’s next. A powerful score in a well-ran race against good company brings thoughts of bigger prizes such as the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland on October 31. Yes, this $1.1 million purchase from the Keeneland yearling sale in September of 2023 looked better than a fresh bottle of moonshine in the Aristides, but his hall of fame conditioner will leave the Breeders’ Cup speculation to others for now.

“The Breeders’ Cup is a long ways off and we are just thinking about the here and now”, says Baffert. “Charlie Whittingham once told me Thoroughbreds are like strawberries, they can go bad overnight so we are not planning too far ahead. The way he responded when they came at him on the lead was the sign of a good horse. It is always great to win Stakes races at Churchill Downs because they are never easy and I am happy for the owners.”

Cornucopian has now won four races in seven lifetime starts with one second place finish. His career earnings are at $462,155 and the win in the Aristides provides a stipend toward Breeders’ Cup entry as it is one of the Dirt Dozen races that helps qualify horses for the year-end World Championships.
