UFC Freedom 250: Pereira v Gane

Alex Pereira suffered a bitter loss to Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday, June 14 at the White House. Pereira lost his bid to become a three-division champion and as a result of his injuries, he was handed a six-month medical suspension. Let's talk MMA.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Pereira received a 180-day medical suspension after his TKO loss to Gane at UFC Freedom 250, pending a clean maxillofacial CT scan.
  • The term is the Association of Boxing Commissions maximum and matches the card's other long suspensions (Gaethje, Topuria, Steve Garcia and Aiemann Zahabi).
  • The finish was controversial: Pereira says several of Gane's shots landed on the back of his head, an illegal target.
  • Referee Herb Dean defended his call, explaining the foul zone is the nape of the neck, not the entire back of the head.
  • Pereira is pursuing an appeal and has called for Dean to step down, with his three-division title bid now stalled.

Why Was Alex Pereira Suspended?

While Pereira was wearing the damage from his fight with Gane, he didn't look to be in as bad of shape as Ilia Topuria who also received a 180-day suspension following his TKO loss to Justin Gaethje. Still, Pereira's facial injuries drew the same mandated absence.

The 180-day term is the Association of Boxing Commissions maximum, and it's pending a clean maxillofacial CT scan, which suggests regulators wanted to rule out facial fractures before clearing him. It's a steep layoff for a fighter whose highlight-reel résumé had carried him into the GOAT conversation.

What Was The Controversy In The Pereira-Gane Fight?

Gane landed multiple blows to the back of Pereira's head. Some of them landed on the nape of the neck, which is illegal. Pereira is appealing the decision, but it is unlikely the result will be changed. He could ride his dispute to an immediate rematch if Tom Aspinall isn't ready for a unification fight with Gane.

The dispute traces back to the second round, when a jab dropped Pereira and Gane followed with a barrage along the fence. Pereira's team has since said it is looking at all grounds for an appeal, though a reversed result would be a rare outcome.

How Did Herb Dean Respond To The Criticism?

Dean offered an insightful response to Pereira's claims, and they were enlightening even for someone like me who has followed the sport for more than 30 years and covered it for nearly two decades. However, it didn't completely clear him because some of the blows were illegal and Dean exhibited a failure to react.

In his video defense, Dean clarified that the illegal zone is the nape of the neck and occipital junction, a narrow band with a one-inch variance rather than the whole back of the head. The explanation reframed the rule, but it didn't fully answer his silence during the sequence.

What's Next For Alex Pereira?

Pereira would obviously want a rematch, but he has to wait to heal. The UFC would also like to have their heavyweight championship situation reconciled. That can only happen if Aspinall rematched Gane for the undisputed title. That fact could keep Pereira waiting or force him to take a fight with brash American heavyweight Josh Hokit.

Whatever direction he picks, the three-division run that defined his rise is on hold. A clean comeback win would make Freedom 250 a speed bump, but the layoff and the controversy guarantee his return is one of the most anticipated storylines in the division.
