For years, low-cost Spirit Airlines has been the butt of jokes by comedians and hosts of late-night TV talk shows. Now the airline may be getting the last laugh.

Spirit is the best U.S. airline, according to a new study by WalletHub, a personal-finance website. WalletHub compared the nine largest U.S. airlines and two regional carriers, using 16 metrics. They included cancellation and delay rates, mishandled baggage mishaps and in-flight comfort.

The study, which relied heavily on Department of Transportation data, determined that Spirit is the most reliable and most affordable airline. It has the lowest overall rate of cancellations, delays, mishandled luggage and denied boardings.

Southwest Airlines ranks as the second-best airline, according to the study. Southwest was given high scores for its rates of cancelled flights and denied boardings.

Regional carrier SkyWest Airlines ranks No. 3 in the study, followed, consecutively, by Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. SkyWest is headquartered in St. George, Utah and carries passengers to 255 destinations throughout North America.

The study names JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian, American Airlines and Southwest as the “most comfortable airlines.” The four carriers “lead the pack in terms of in-flight experience, offering free amenities such as wi-fi, extra legroom and complimentary snacks and beverages,” the study says.

JetBlue, however, finishes in the middle of the pack—No. 6—in the best airline rankings. American is further behind at No. 8, while Delta Air Lines ranks No. 7 and United Airlines No. 10.

SkyWest and another regional carrier, Envoy Air, are the must pet-friendly airlines, the study says. They were involved in no pet-related “incidents,” according to the study, which noted that Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit do not allow pet transport.

Envoy finishes last in WalletHub’s rankings. It is a subsidiary of American Airlines Group and flies to more than 160 destinations under the American Eagle brand.
