Many diners have wondered how much more a restaurant meal costs than buying and cooking the same food at home. A new study finds that restaurant entrees can be many times more expensive.

Lasagna costs, on average, 586% more at a restaurant than at home, and a hamburger costs 438% more at a restaurant, according to the study by point-of-sale software company BLogic Systems. The company found average prices for some of the most-ordered meals by diners and compared them with average prices of the ingredients for a single serving. The study used data from Statista and average prices from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The average price for lasagna at a restaurant is $19, while the average cost of the ingredients for a single serving is $2.77, the study finds. A burger—America’s most popular entree—averages $14.60 at a restaurant, while its ingredients for a single serving cost $2.72.

Diners pay an average cost of $25 for a steak and a baked potato—about three times more than the $8.70 average price of the ingredients, according to the study.

Entrees at Mexican restaurants are often relatively inexpensive, but diners are paying many times more than the average cost of the ingredients.

Diners pay an average price of $20 for fajitas, while the ingredients cost an average of $3.15. Restaurants charge an average price of $13.40 for a burrito, compared with the $2.86 average cost for the ingredients. Nachos sell for an average price of $15 in a restaurant, while the ingredients cost an average of $3.34.

Italian food also sees a more than six-fold increase in a restaurant. Fettucine alfredo sells for an average of $18.80 in restaurants, while the ingredients cost an average of $2.80.

Eating breakfast food out of the house can also produce a massive markup vs. eating at home. A single serving of hash browns costs, on average, $2.70 at a restaurant, while the ingredients can be bought for an average price of 84 cents.

For each food item in the study, BLogic Systems used a “standard” recipe and compiled a full list of ingredients required to prepare a single serving. Ingredient prices were collected primarily from Bureau of Labor Statistics average price data, supplemented by other sources when food items were not included in the federal data. Restaurant prices were from The Food Institute, which has provided food industry information since 1928.
