Manchester Cathedral is celebrating the music, story and culture of the city with a unique event that’s a first for the United Kingdom.
Luminiscence is a dazzling immersive projection concert with cutting-edge video-mapping and sound technology that brings the historic cathedral to life.
The event has illuminated twenty of the world’s most extraordinary historic landmarks and is now casting the stunning architecture and storied history of Manchester Cathedral in an entirely new light.
Arranged orchestral renditions of Manchester’s most iconic anthems are brought to life by the Collectives Gospel Choir, as they have never been heard before. The music is accompanied by an engaging script written by BAFTA Award-winning writer Tim Whitnall, and is narrated by local Manchester actor Christopher Eccleston, who is best known for his performance in “Doctor Who”. The experience features a varied set list, with recognizable British hits such as Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve, Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division and Live Forever by Oasis.
A portion of every ticket sold will be donated directly to the ongoing upkeep and preservation of Manchester Cathedral. Construction of the cathedral began in the early 15th century, with significant construction and renovations continuing until 1882.

Due to popular demand, the limited-time activation has announced an extension at Manchester Cathedral and is running through June 5. Audiences have described the event as deeply moving and profoundly emotional, while leaving them inspired and uplifted by Manchester’s remarkable story.
Luminiscence has illuminated twenty of the world’s most extraordinary historic landmarks, with the brand committing to celebrating, safeguarding and sharing some of the world’s most iconic heritage sites that provide the stunning backdrop for its productions.
“Absolutely brilliant, loved the lights, the music, the narration,” wrote one visitor. “And if you weren’t proud to be a Mancunian when you went in, you certainly were when you came out. Can’t praise it highly enough.”
A second wrote, “Astonishing. So much more than I was expecting. Very moving.”
Elsewhere in Europe, the event is currently taking place at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, St. Lorenz in Nuremberg, The Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi in Barcelona and four locations in France.
Luminiscence is just one of many arts and culture events that has debuted in Manchester, a recent shift which would usually see major events taking place in England’s capital city. Earlier this year, the BRIT Awards headed north for the first time to Co-op Live, and in December 2023, the prestigious Chanel Metiers d'Art fashion show turned the Northern Quarter into a hotspot for supermodels and A-listers.
