Best Summer Events 2026, Per European Best Destinations
Joanne Shurvell · 2026-06-18 · via Forbes - Arts

For its Best Summer Events in Europe 2026 ranking, European Best Destinations evaluated 80 events taking place between June and September. The selection considered factors including originality, cultural importance, visitor experience, visual impact, reputation, value and international appeal.

The shortlist spans everything from major music festivals and sporting spectacles to wine fairs, street theater, drone displays, culinary events and long-standing local traditional festivals.

The final ranking of 10 events was determined with input from a panel of experienced travelers and event-goers who regularly attend cultural, sporting and entertainment events across Europe and beyond.

1.Zagreb Classic, Croatia, 19 June - July 3

Zagreb

European Best Destinations

One of the best classical music experiences in Europe, Zagreb Classic transforms the magnificent King Tomislav Square into a spectacular open-air concert hall under the stars. Free to attend, the concert series features world-class orchestras, celebrated soloists and acclaimed conductors performing well-known masterpieces, opera arias and contemporary compositions.

Where to Stay: Historic Esplanade Zagreb Hotel, an Art Deco luxury hotel, opened in 1925 to accommodate passengers of the Orient Express as Zagreb was one of the stops of the Orient Express on the route Paris-Venice-Istanbul.

2.Les Grandes Eaux Nocturnes, Versailles, France, June 6 - September 19

Versailles

NICOLAS CHAVANCE GROUPE

For an incredible nocturnal spectacle that recreates the baroque display originally designed for Louis XIV, visit France’s most famous palace at night. Every Saturday night throughout the summer, this free experience unfolds as the gardens, fountains, groves and water features are illuminated and choreographed to music, culminating in a fireworks display.

Where to stay: Hôtel Les Lumières is a Relais Chateaux hotel in two restored 17th-century pavilions directly opposite the Palace of Versailles.

3.Summer Opening Season Festival, Batumi, Georgia, June 20-21

Marking the start of summer, this event transforms the Black Sea waterfront city into a lively open-air festival with music, beach bars and entertainment throughout the day. Live music is the focus, with local and international DJs and bands performing from morning until late at night. And as night falls, fireworks light up the coast.

Where to stay: Part of Georgia’s popular boutique hotel collection, Rooms Batumi combines industrial-style design with a rooftop pool and vibrant communal spaces.

4.Reserve Cup Marbella, Spain, June 18-20

Colibri Theatre

This unusual street arts festival transforms the Romanian city into a giant open-air stage where puppets, circus artists, musicians, performers, visual artists and storytellers take over streets, parks and public squares. As one of the largest outdoor arts festivals in Southeastern Europe, more than 60 international companies and artists from across Europe and beyond bring giant puppets, aerial performances, contemporary circus, street theater, concerts, visual installations, video mapping, exhibitions and interactive workshops to audiences of all ages.

Where to stay: 4-star boutique Hotel Golden House, set in a 19th century former mansion, offers spacious rooms, a restaurant, summer garden and terrace, creating a quieter, more intimate atmosphere that feels more like a historic house stay than a conventional city hotel.

7.St Dominik’s Fair, Gdansk, Poland, July 25 - August 16

St Dominic's Fair in Gdansk

Amber Expo

The 766th edition of St. Dominic’s Fair is themed “Everyone Has Their Own Story Here,” highlighting the fair’s long tradition as a shared cultural space shaped over generations by traders, locals and visitors alike. Where to stay: Hotel Gdańsk Boutique, housed in a carefully restored former granary beside the marina, combines original historic brick architecture with modern, understated interiors. It also features a spa and wellness facilities.

8.Sao Jao, Porto, Portugal, June 23-24

The São João Festival is Porto’s largest annual celebration, held each June in honor of St. John, when the city turns into a city-wide street party of music, food and tradition. Known for its playful customs: plastic hammers, garlic flowers, lanterns and midnight fireworks over the Douro, the night unfolds with street concerts, grilled sardines and neighborhood celebrations that continue until sunrise.

Where to Stay: Perched on a hill with glorious views of the Douro River and a rooftop pool, Torel Avantgarde is a 5-star boutique hotel especially appealing to art and design lovers as each guest room is dedicated to a painter, writer, designer or musician, with decor that references each artist’s work.

9.Lloret Drone Festival, Lloret de Mar, Spain, September 11-12

Lloret Drone Festival

Ayuntamiento de Lloret

For a few nights each summer, the Costa Brava sky becomes a shifting canvas of light. At the Lloret Drone Festival, thousands of drones replace traditional fireworks, forming coordinated patterns, shapes and visual sequences above the Mediterranean. The result is a contemporary light show that blends technology with spectacle in one of Europe’s most distinctive summer events.

Where to stay: Delamar Hotel, an adults-only hotel in the town center and near the beach, features a rooftop pool and is a good choice if you want to stay close to restaurants and nightlife, without staying in a large resort.

10.Gibraltar National Day, September 10
