In keeping with tradition of the Met Gala’s annual spring schedule, this year’s event, timed as always alongside the unveiling of the Met’s Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, will take place on the first Monday in May, May 4.

In addition to celebrating the museum’s yearly costume exhibition—with curator in charge Andrew Bolton at the helm—the Met Gala’s main purpose is to raise funds for the Costume Institute, profiting from the attendance of high-profile celebrities and designers who purchase a table at the event in exchange for exposure.

Who Is Hosting The Met Gala?

Alongside longstanding gala co-chair, chief content officer for Condé Nast and global editorial director of Vogue Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams will co-chair the annual benefit.

Additionally, the gala will be co-chaired by Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, with the Gala Host Committee including Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Alex Consani, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, Lisa, Chloe Malle, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson and Yseult—plus newly announced members Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Rebecca Hall, Aimee Mullins, Tschabalala Self, Amy Sherald and Chase Sui Wonders.

Finally, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, lead sponsors for both the gala and the exhibition, will serve as honorary chairs for the event.

Met Gala Exhibition Theme And What ‘Costume Art’ Means

On view until January 10 of next year, the exhibition, simply titled Costume Art, will feature just shy of 400 individual objects and “examine the centrality of the dressed body, juxtaposing garments and works of art from across the museum’s vast collection,” according to The Met.

Some highlights of featured works include:

  • a modern suit, circa 2022-23, designed by Glenn Martens for Y/Project in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, displayed alongside a 1st–2nd century CE marble statue of Diadoumenos
  • an 1883 dress design juxtaposed against Georges Seurat’s 1884 painting “Study for ‘A Sunday on La Grande Jatte’”
  • an ensemble by Comme des Garçons from 1997–98 displayed beside Max Weber’s 1917 cubist bronze sculpture “Figure in Rotation”

In a statement, Bolton explained his process for curating this exhibition and his desire to connect artistic representations of the body with fashion as an embodied art form.

“Rather than prioritizing fashion’s visuality, which often comes at the expense of the corporeal, Costume Art privileges its materiality and the indivisible connection between our bodies and the clothes we wear,” he said.

Met Gala Dress Code And What ‘Fashion Is Art’ Means

The gala’s dress code—often closely related to the exhibition’s central theme in both verbiage and inspiration—is designed to be slightly ambiguous, encouraging designers, guests and spectators to get creative with their own subjective interpretations of the exhibition’s concepts and motifs.

This year’s dress code, “Fashion is Art,” invites designers to draw inspiration from both fashion’s historic homage to traditional art forms and art’s depictions of the dressed body.

Designers To Watch At The Met Gala Red Carpet

In accordance with the theme, some of the most anticipated designer features are those with a history of crafting garments that play with proportion, scale and color for a unique blend of fashion and artistry.

These are designer brands like Schiaparelli, known for its trompe l-oeil designs and surreal aesthetic, which is currently under the direction of Daniel Roseberry; Iris van Herpen, the eponymous haute couture house recognized for its blend of advanced technology with traditional craftsmanship; and Loewe, recently taken over by creative director duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, and often praised for its commitment to bold colorways and unique textile usage.

Additionally, with a dress code that leaves room for both abstract interpretations and literal renderings, designers like Daniel del Valle, recently popularized after showcasing a collection of fashions inspired by and physically replicating tile, ceramics and floral arrangements for the brand TheVxlley, are expected to not only appear on the Met Gala red carpet but to take the dress code at face value.

Predicted Celebrity Guests At The Met Gala

Bhavitha Mandava is a 25-year-old NYU student-turned-model who, after being discovered on a subway platform in the summer of 2024, quickly became something of a muse for Chanel’s newest creative director, Matthieu Blazy. Known colloquially as the model who opened the Chanel Métiers d'Art runway show in late 2025, the newly appointed Chanel house ambassador is the current it-girl of the modeling industry and is expected to appear at the Met Gala 2026 in a custom look from Chanel.

Chase Infiniti and Emma Stone are fresh off of the awards circuit after their performances in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, respectively, earned them each several nominations. They are both brand ambassadors for Louis Vuitton so, in addition to the many custom Louis Vuitton looks each star wore to collect her awards, both Infiniti and Stone are predicted to appear at the gala in custom ensembles by the brand’s artistic director of women's collections, Nicolas Ghesquière.

Sombr, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer who quickly rose to pop-stardom following the release of his first studio album, I Barely Know Her, was announced as a global brand ambassador for Valentino in February of this year. Because of the star’s close ties to the brand and international fame, Sombr is expected to not only appear at the gala this May, but sport a custom look by Valentino for the occasion.

Sabrina Carpenter, the in-demand pop star who recently headlined the 2026 Coachella Festival in a series of custom Dior ensembles crafted by creative director Jonathan Anderson, will for certain be in attendance as a member of the Gala Host Committee—possibly in another custom look from the French luxury house.

Elle Fanning is another star seen attending several events from this year’s award circuit for her nominated performance in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value—always in an elevated designer gown. While Fanning isn’t loyal to one designer in particular, recently sporting fashions by Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Givenchy, Bottega Veneta and Chanel for various occasions, the actress is expected to attend the gala in jewelry from Cartier, a brand for which the star has been a global brand ambassador since 2023.

Olivia Dean often champions smaller designers alongside luxury brands through her selection of glamorous performance gowns and red carpet looks. The recent Grammy award-winning artist is predicted to attend this year’s gala in a feminine ensemble put together by her long-time stylist Simone Beyene.

Starring alongside Noah Jupe in Robert Icke’s iteration of Romeo and Juliet in the West End, Sadie Sink has appeared as a frequent face for Prada—starring in numerous campaigns and often appearing on the red carpet in looks from the luxury brand. And so, if Sink does attend the gala on May 4, the star is predicted to arrive in a custom Prada ensemble as she did last year.
