The best things in Wiz Khalifa’s kitchen were handed down. Turkey Spaghetti from his mother, Peachie. Lawry’s Seasoning Salt from Peachie’s great-grandmother, Jessie Mary Brantley, who was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1915 and cooked with it her entire life. Four generations later, the salt peppered with spices like tumeric and paprika is still on the table. Some legacies are better seasoned than others.

"Mama Said Lawry’s," the new movement from the iconic flavor brand, makes that inheritance its subject. Partnering with GRAMMY and Golden Globe nominated recording artist Wiz Khalifa and his mother, Peachie, for cookout season, Lawry’s becomes a through-line—the thing that makes the meal reminiscent of the person who made it, wherever you happen to be eating it.

I sat down with Wiz and Peachie to talk about family rituals, the architecture of a great cookout, and what it means to feed the people you love.

Wiz, you're currently on the Lost Americana tour with MGK. When you think about the rituals that define America, which ones still feel most enduring?

Wiz: I think every family makes their own traditions. Whether it's getting together on a holiday or watching a game with friends, I think the ritual is just spending time with people you love. For my family, we love hanging by the pool and cooking together.

Juneteenth and the Fourth of July are both occasions that bring families and communities together around food. What role have those celebrations played in your own life?

Wiz: I love both those holidays. Just taking time to spend with the family gives us all a moment to reset and just enjoy being together.

Peachie: As a descendant of emancipated Americans, the role of celebrating freedom and liberation has served as a reminder of the importance of sustenance and legacy.

Every family has its own way of gathering. What instantly tells you you're at a Khalifa family cookout?

Wiz: The best food and the best scents! When we're together you know there's going to be good food and good smells, if you know what I mean.

Peachie: The vibes are already transmitted from the invite. From there it's love and laughter. Everybody feels like family. The good food is the literal cherry on top and it's always the dash of Lawry's that elevates the flavors at our table.

There's a whole visual language around the American cookout. Which parts of it inspire you most?

Wiz: I love when there's a full table of food and my favorite people sitting around the swimming pool. No fancy setup. Just good food, good energy, and good people.

Peachie: I love that each celebration follows the rituals and customs of its cultural ancestors. That's my favorite part.

A great playlist can shape a gathering as much as the food. What role does music play when you're entertaining?

Wiz: Such a major role. You need good music to set the vibe of the party.

Do any family recipes, summer rituals, or food traditions find their way into your creative process?

Wiz: Turkey Spaghetti is my favorite dish that my mom makes. She uses Lawry's Seasoning Salt in the recipe, so it always hits. Whenever I go on tour, she makes sure to send me off with some so I have it on the road and it's also the best for late nights in the studio.

Both music and cooking are forms of storytelling passed between generations. What has been handed down in your family that you hope continues into the future?

Wiz: We are always cooking. We're constantly trying new recipes and learning them together. Being able to pass down my family's dishes to my kids is very important to me.

After so much time on the road, what does home mean to you today?

Wiz: Family is the most important! Whether I'm coaching my son's sports games or hosting a pool party, just appreciating the time we spend together really grounds me.

Peachie, you've watched family gatherings evolve over the years. What has changed the most, and what traditions have remained the same?

Peachie: It has been a huge blessing to see family gatherings evolve over the years. What remains the same is the vibe and the tradition; we pick up right where we left off.

Lawry's has been part of American cookout culture for generations. What made this partnership feel like a natural fit for your family?

Wiz: I love this partnership because Lawry's has always been a go to in my family. The seasonings are the most important part for any BBQ and I know with Lawry's everything will be better.

Peachie: This partnership with Lawry's has such a natural feel with my family because my great-grandmother, Jessie Mary Brantley, Ibae, was born in 1915 in Birmingham, Alabama and taught me how to cook using Lawry's Seasoning. It has been in every kitchen that has nourished and sustained me.
