Test-Driving The 2026 BMW M2 CS: Ready For Road Trip Duty

It’s common for the most high-performance and track-ready variant of any sports car to be ill-suited for road trips. There’s a reason why Porsche squeezes the GTS trim into its 911 lineup just below the GT3 in the performance hierarchy: Excellent power, handling that’s a cut above, yet with ample sound deadening, chassis parts that behoove on-road comfort, and so on. The 2026 BMW M2 CS is the most hardcore version of the current G87-generation M2, sporting not just re-tuned dampers, but a lot more power, some bits borrowed from the M4 GT4 race car, and even a decent diet that cuts weight by around 100 pounds.

That being said, this nearly $100,000 Bavarian coupe is an excellent road trip rig. It’s got the interior space and cargo, ride quality, and can even easily exceed the EPA’s estimated fuel economy. That is, if one is willing to keep their hand on the wheel at all times. I recently discovered this after a lengthy trip from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area, and was surprised by the CS’ intrepid traveler manners.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS: Ample Comfort With a Catch

The latest BMW M2 CS sports a carbon-fiber rich interior, with leather adorning its comfortable, deeply bolstered buckets and plenty of space throughout. Because its roof is also made of carbon, there’s no chance of a sunroof impeding headroom. The only slight downside to the seats is reaching a hair further to tap its 14.9-inch infotainment screen if the seat is set as low as possible with all the tilt. Even for my six-foot-three stature. Speaking of the screen, its software is easy enough to get used to, but the fact that icons all generally look the same, it can take one’s eyes off the road more than necessary to change between apps.

Some folks scoff at the 2026 BMW M2 CS' seats, but they're rather comfortable if you're of the right height and build.

Peter Nelson

The seats are also best-shaped for someone tall and lanky. Thankfully, I’d lost a little weight in the weeks leading up to my trip, so squeezing in and staying comfortable wasn’t an issue. However, anyone in excess of 34 inches at the waist may disagree. They also offer a type of comfort that’s akin to a Brooks saddle on a bicycle; stiff, but in the sense that they reduce pressure points. And if someone’s going to put in some miles cradled by their deep bolsters, it’s best to start off a bit more reclined than usual. Radar cruise control keeps ankle and foot strain at bay, too.

Then, the CS retains the same interior dimensions as the standard M2, so there’s still a conveniently rectangular 14 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk. It can haul enough luggage for two occupants on a long roadtrip, one person’s belongings with some track day supplies, etc. Though, the absence of any cupholders in the center console makes for creative ways to hold one’s beverage. Pro-tip: the shallow storage cubby at the rear of the console holds a massive fountain drink well.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS: Surprisingly Hyper-Miling-Ready

The CS’ signature bodywork sports burlier fenders than the standard M2, which may help with aerodynamics. Though, the integrated duckbill spoiler on the trunk may cancel them out—by the way, the trunklid is made entirely of carbon fiber.

Though, one thing’s for sure is the M2 CS’ fuel economy. Producing 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, which enables a 0-60 mph run of 3.3 seconds, one wouldn’t necessarily think of it as a prime candidate for hyper-miling duty. But I routinely saw above 26 mpg—3 more than its EPA rating on the highway—and without making any massive changes to my normal expedient pace. If I wanted to keep the cruise set at just below 70 mph and focus on leisure, I saw 30.2 mpg on generally flat stretches at sea level. Not bad at all.

Wide body work, a duckbill spoiler, and tires that love to follow cracks and imperfection in the roadway: the 2026 BMW M2 CS.

Peter Nelson

Then, when I encountered unsavory characters who, for some immoral reason, found 65 mph to be perfectly acceptable for the left lane, the inline-six’s immense torque and lightning-fast eight-speed automatic gearbox allowed for quick squirts of power to pass on the right (which I try to avoid, I swear). Well, not without potentially, allegedly running afoul of acceptable highway speed; this thing jumps up above 100 mph faster than you can say Bayerische Motoren Werke.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS: Great Ride Quality For The Initiated

The CS and standard M2 come equipped with adaptive dampers, though the former’s feature track-tuned programming, stiffer spring rates, and the overall chassis is aligned for better turn-in and grip on track. This results in a lively front end, livelier than most modern new sports cars. It follows cracks and depressions in the tarmac a bit too easily, so it’s important to always have one hand somewhat firmly on the wheel.

I drove from LA to south Marin County (just north of SF’s city limits) in one stint, cruising up Highway 1 through Big Sur along the way. After nine hours in the saddle, the only things that hurt were my wrists, and it was due to the CS’ exuberance for turning.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS' Velvet Blue color always looks good, but is best-served in nicely dispersed overcast lighting.

Peter Nelson

Then, with the dampers set to Comfort, the ride quality was acceptably comfortable, but only by my standards that were forged in spending hundreds of thousands of miles in automotive fare sporting stiff, track-ready suspension tuning. People who aren’t used to this, or their passengers, may not appreciate the CS’ propensity to bounce and shudder. Though, the dampers did a great job at soaking up sharper/crappier stretches of tarmac, which is a testament to M engineers’ efforts.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS has one determined face.

2026 BMW M2 CS: Open-Road Rambler

I’m not going to lie, I had cold feet in the days leading up to my lengthy trip in the 2026 BMW M2 CS. “Should I just take my slightly more comfortable BMW 128i?” I pondered over and over, but I felt it’d be a Crime Against Car Enthusiasm if I left the CS sitting on my driveway for five days. Lo and behold, this beast was plenty comfortable, and I even achieved far better fuel economy than my old 1er would’ve. Well, at the expense of my wrists, and almost spilling coffee all over its beautiful, carbon/leather/Alcantara-rich interior; whether by ride quality or lack of a normal cupholder. Additionally, its fuel tank is only around 14 gallons, so while it’s easy to one-up America’s EPA with a more restrained right foot, one does have to stop more due to the less-than-ideal range.

But if someone’s looking at the 2026 BMW CS as a true all-rounder, or is potentially planning a road trip where ripping laps on-track is part of the adventure (I really wish I could’ve visited NorCal’s glorious Sonoma Raceway and Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca), fear not: this BMW coupe eats up miles better than you might expect.

Naturally, it’s epic fun on twisty roads, too:
