Terrazas De Los Andes Releases One Of The Highest Altitude Malbecs Ever

Extremo Malbec 2022

Terrazas de los Andes

Located at the eastern foothills of the Andes, Mendoza is probably the most beautiful winemaking region in all of Argentina. But it is undoubtedly the country’s most significant area of production. In fact, it accounts for roughly 66% of the total national output of fermented grapes.

Since the mid-1990s, Terrazas de los Andes has been pushing the boundaries for just how high this Malbec migration can climb. Both figuratively and literally. The winery was founded by Moët-Hennessy with an eye on whether or not increased altitude could coax greater freshness and precision out of this particular style of fruit.

Wine lovers are ready to receive the latest results in the form of Extremo Malbec 2022. It’s an ultra-luxe bottling crafted from a single parcel of vineyard more than a mile high. Indeed, at 5,400 feet it includes the highest cultivated fruit in all of the Uco Valley – one of the top viticultural regions in all of Mendoza. Here you’ll find some of the lowest average temperatures, naturally, but also mineral-rich soil responsible for intense violet aromas and super soft tannins.

This particular vintage hits US shelves this month with a stratospheric price tag to match – $200 per bottle.

"Extremo Malbec represents the pinnacle of our ‘Ascension Journey’ and our vision for mountain winemaking," says Terrazas de los Andes estate director Lucas Löwi, referring to the decade-long project to establish even higher elevation Malbec. "This exceptional parcel allows us to capture the Andes with remarkable precision, translating its climate, soil profile, biodiversity and unique sense of place into a wine of depth, freshness and elegance."

Löwi’s lofty assessment has already been backed up by several prominent 100-point scores. And it seems certain that his ascent with Terrazas de los Andes is just getting started. The longtime viticultural vet – and current president of Wines of Argentina – assumed the role of CEO for the winery back in 2023. Since taking over, he’s doubled down on the brand’s commitment to regenerative agriculture and preservation of mountain ecosystems.

Extremo Malbec 2022 is a case in point. It carries all the weight and structure of an Old World standout; there are layers of ripened blackberry to balance out slate-like minerality. Acidity is balanced and the finesse of the finish is undeniable. For longtime admirers of South American red wine, Terrazas de los Andes is reaffirming their suspicions: the sky’s the limit.
