The music Elton John has recorded throughout his career has been classified under many different labels. Sometimes it’s pop, sometimes it’s rock, and occasionally other descriptors are a better fit. Rarely does the piano player drift into electronic and dance music, although he’s so successful that even John has landed a few wins on rankings that focus specifically on those genres.
Several of John’s most recent popular songs, such as “Cold Heart” with Dua Lipa and “Hold Me Closer,” a collaboration with Britney Spears, were decidedly dance-pop, and it seems that the EGOT winner is happy with that lane. John scores a new placement on one of Billboard’s dance charts with a just-released compilation, one which helps him reach higher than ever before on a single tally.
On this week’s Top Dance Albums chart, Billboard’s list of the most-consumed projects in that one genre – which can often include both electronic and dance projects – Positiva Presents: Elton John: The Remix debuts. The set was released as part of Record Store Day, and is one of dozens of titles that flood Billboard’s rosters after racking up strong sales.
The set, released by Positiva Records -which is where it gets its name, includes eight songs that have been remixed by artists like The Blessed Madonna, Purple Disco Machine, Claptone, and Shep Pettibone. Famous tracks such as “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” “Cold Heart,” “Rocket Man,” and “Hold Me Closer” are all included on the LP, which was limited to only 7,500 copies. After its first tracking frame of availability, Positiva Presents launches at No. 18 on the Top Dance Albums tally.
While John is not typically associated with dance music, Positiva Presents earns the superstar his third trip to the Top Dance Albums chart. He first landed on the list back in January 2004 with an EP titled simply Remixed. More than eight years later, Good Morning to the Night, John’s first team-up with the electronic production group Pnau – the pair would later rework his single “Cold Heart” with Lipa, turning it into a global smash – spent one frame on the tally in 2012.
As Positiva Presents arrives, John reaches a new career high on the Top Dance Albums chart. The set’s No. 18 arrival beats No. 20, where Good Morning to the Night peaked. The Remixed EP opened and topped out at No. 23.
Three titles debut on this week’s Top Dance Albums chart, and they all come from superstars. Nine Inch Noise, a collaborative full-length between Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize, is the sole new entry inside the top 10, as that effort launches at No. 6. Just two pegs ahead of Positiva Presents comes Madonna with The Confessions Tour. That live album was originally shared back in 2007, and just like John’s remix project, it too was re-released for Record Store Day, and it debuts on multiple rankings thanks to that refresh.
Two full-lengths by John chart in America, but Positiva Presents is the only one to land on the Top Dance Albums list. His greatest hits collection Diamonds dips from where it sat last frame on the Top Rock Albums (No. 19) and Top Rock & Alternative Albums charts (No. 21), as well as the Billboard 200 (No. 94).
