Filing for Love

Filing for Love

CJ ENM

The South Korean drama Filing for Love is the latest office romance drama to captivate viewers worldwide through its popular leads, funny storytelling, and witty dialogue. Produced by CJ ENM and Studio Dragon, Filing for Love follows charismatic audit manager Joo In-a (Shin Hye-sun) and the company’s ace employee Noh Ki-jun (Gong Myung), who was once the star of the internal audit team but was demoted to handle petty workplace scandals, as they navigate the workplace drama – à la Enemies to Lovers.

First premiered on April 25, the workplace comedy-romance (and sometimes thriller) has 12 episodes, airing weekly on tvN in Korea, on HBO Max in Asia, and on Rakuten Viki everywhere else. According to Rakuten Viki, Filing for Love debuted at No. 1 on the weekly charts across the Americas, Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, and North Africa, and ranked No. 2 in India.

Created by Yang Hee-seung (A Hundred Memories), directed by Jamie K Lee (My Dearest Nemesis, Delightfully Deceitful), and written by Yeon Eun-ho (Crash Course in Romance), Filing for Love did really well domestically, recording a nationwide household average rating of 9.4% and a peak of 10.6%, according to Nielsen Korea. In the Seoul metropolitan area, the average was 10.3%, peaking at 11.8%. The series ranked No. 1 in its time slot across all channels, with its key demographic being 20-49-year-olds, peaking at 4.6% in the metropolitan area and 3.8% nationwide.

“The success of Filing for Love represents more than the success of a single Korean rom-com series,” says Sebastian Kim, Head of CJ ENM’s Content Business Unit, in a press release. “The drama showcases the evolving diversity and versatility of Korean romantic comedies by delivering fresh, unexpected, and unique storytelling—something CJ ENM continuously strives to achieve.”

MORE FOR YOU

So, what exactly is Filing for Love?

Ki-jun was on top of the world as the star employee in the internal audit team’s top department (there are three tiers of departments). With the arrival of the cold and strict In-a, who becomes the manager of all the audit departments, she demotes him to lead the lowest tiered department (workplace scandals, employee complaints), stating he’s best for the job. When he receives an anonymous tip that she may be involved in an inappropriate office relationship, he sees it as an opportunity to get back at her. As time goes on, and they work closely together, he begins to see past her cold exterior, finding a sort of attraction towards her – all while working in a department that exposes these office romances.

Who does it star?

Taking the lead as In-a, the stern manager with a secret, Shin Hye-sun has established herself as a star performer with a string of successful shows, including Mr. Queen, Welcome to Samdal-ri, See You In my 19th Life, and Dear Hyeri. K-drama fans may recognize her from the Netflix mystery thriller drama, The Art of Sarah, as she plays multiple characters in the series.

Ki-jun is played by Gong Myoung, who is known for being in several romantic dramas, including Second Shot at Love, Lovers of the Red Sky, and Way Back Love. He also appeared in Netflix’s Mercy for None and Season 2 of Bloodhounds.
