The premiere of the much-anticipated first Spanish-language television adaptation of The House of the Spirits (La Casa de los Espíritus) is finally here. And if you're a fan of Isabel Allende's sweeping novel and are eager to binge the Prime Video series, you'll have to pace yourself, as not all episodes will drop at once.

The eight-episode series, filmed in Chile with a Latin American cast and crew, launches on April 29 with three episodes, followed by two more on May 6 and the final three on May 13, exclusively on Prime Video worldwide.

What the Series Is About

Prime Video made The House of the Spirits a priority project, with Javiera Balmaceda, Amazon Studios' Head of Originals for Latin America, championing the adaptation from the start.

Based on Allende's bestselling novel, the series is a family saga spanning half a century. It follows three generations of women – Clara, Blanca and Alba – navigating life in a conservative South American country marked by class struggle, political upheaval and magic. Their story builds toward a crisis that pits a tyrannical patriarch against his beloved granddaughter on opposite sides of a revolution.

Allende's novel has sold over 70 million copies worldwide and is considered one of the most important works of 20th-century literature.

The novel was adapted into an English-language film in 1993, featuring Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder and Antonio Banderas, but critics widely considered it miscast and poorly received. That film was also shot in Denmark and Portugal rather than Chile.

The Prime Video series was filmed entirely in Chile, with the eight-episode format giving the complex storyline the room it needs to breathe.

Adding to the authenticity factor, Mon Laferte, the acclaimed Chilean-Mexican singer-songwriter and five-time Latin Grammy Award winner, exclusively created the original theme song "Nuestra Casa" for the series.

Who Are the Main Characters

Clara del Valle is the emotional heart of the story. Born with psychic gifts, she went mute at 10 after failing to prevent her sister Rosa's death, staying silent for nearly a decade. She eventually marries Esteban Trueba, but after discovering his violent nature, vows never to speak to him again. She appears in the series as a ghost, guiding her granddaughter Alba through her pain via hundreds of personal diaries.

Blanca Trueba is Clara and Esteban's eldest daughter and Alba's mother. She inherits her mother's free spirit and her father's stubborn passion. A childhood friendship with Pedro Tercero García becomes a forbidden romance that leads her to rebel against the rigid class divisions of her society.

Alba is the story's narrator and Clara and Esteban's only granddaughter. We meet her in her mid-twenties, a torture survivor slowly unraveling her trauma. Reading Clara's diaries helps her understand how each ancestor's choices shaped her own life. Raised between Clara's mystical openness and Esteban's rigid conservatism, she loves her grandfather but openly challenges his worldview.

Esteban Trueba is the saga's complex patriarch. Hardened by poverty and grief after losing his first love, Rosa, he becomes a feared and brutal landowner. Clara softens him and brings him genuine happiness, but his volatile temper slowly erodes everything she gave him.

Férula Trueba is Esteban's devoted sister, who spent her life caring for their ailing mother. After her mother's death, she moves in with Clara and Esteban, developing an intense and conflicted attachment to Clara that deeply unsettles her own religious conscience.

Nívea del Valle is Clara and Rosa's mother and the matriarch who starts it all. A fearless feminist and social activist, her love for her large family is matched only by her fierce determination to win women the right to vote.

Pedro Tercero García is the son of a laborer, Pedro Tercero grows up in poverty, witnessing stark class divides that shape his worldview. A natural rebel, he becomes a voice for the oppressed, spreading his message through song after being expelled from the estate where he was raised. He is Blanca’s true love and Alba’s biological father, but his relationship with Blanca is violently torn apart, altering the course of both their lives.

Who's in It

Alfonso Herrera (Ozark, Rebel Moon) leads the cast as patriarch Esteban Trueba.

Rochi Hernández (30 Nights with my Ex) takes on the role of Alba.

Fernanda Castillo (El Señor de los Cielos) plays Férula.

Aline Kuppenheim (1976, A Fantastic Woman) portrays Nivea del Valle.

Juan Pablo Raba (News of a Kidnapping) plays Tío Marcos.

Pablo Macaya (In Her Place) and Nicolás Contreras (Baby Bandito) share the role of Pedro Tercero.

Allende serves as executive producer alongside Eva Longoria, Courtney Saladino, Stephanie Berk, Ben Spector and Adam Berkowitz. Showrunners Urrejola, Francisca Alegría (The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future) and Andrés Wood (News of a Kidnapping) helm the adaptation.

FilmNation Entertainment, behind Anora and Conclave, produces alongside Chilean company Fábula, producer of The Eternal Memory and A Fantastic Woman.
