The Devil Wears Prada 2, starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, is new in theaters this weekend, nearly 20 years after the release of the hit comedy.

Directed by the 2006 film’s director David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada 2 features the return of Miranda Priestly (Streep), Andy Sachs (Hathaway), Emily Charlton (Blunt) and Nigel Kipling (Tucci) back to the world of fashion in New York City.

The sequel finds Andy returning to the offices of her former icy boss Miranda’s Runway Magazine, which is having trouble navigating its way through the digital media landscape. Runway finds hope for survival, though, with the help of Miranda’s former assistant-turned-rival Emily, who runs a luxury fashion brand flush with cash.

Rated PG-13, The Devil Wears Prada 2 features the return of Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman from the 2006 original, while the new film adds Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Kenneth Branagh, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon and Helen J. Shen to the cast.

RT’s Critics Consensus and Audience Summary are still pending.

By contrast, 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada earned a 75% “fresh” RT critics’ score based on 193 reviews and a 76% “fresh” Popcornmeter score based on 250,000-plus user ratings.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’?

David Fear of Rolling Stone is among the top critics on RT who gives The Devil Wears Prada 2 a “fresh” score on RT. Noting the plot’s challenges of print media in the digital age, Fear writes in his RT review summary, “For journalists, this is a horror movie no matter how stylish and dazzling you dress it up. Every victory is given the full ‘Prada’ treatment and is still explicitly stated as being Pyrrhic.”

Tomris Laffly of Roger Ebert.com also gives The Devil Wears Prada 2 a “fresh” score, but with some reservations. Laffly writes in her RT review summary, “The movie goes out of its way to give us the fans what we want … but what it forgets to do is take the audience on a character-driven journey, as in the first movie, where everyone feels essential and every dot is connected.”

Katie Erbland of IndieWire also gives The Devil Wears Prada 2 a “fresh” score, yet she questions the film’s existence. Erbland writes in her RT review summary, “If it ain’t broke … well, maybe don’t make a whole sequel about it? More optimistically, if this sequel is giving the fans more of what they loved in the first place, at least it’s not wholly disastrous or oddly insulting. It’s fine."

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also has reservations about The Devil Wears Prada 2 but gives it a “fresh” score anyway. Rooney writes on RT, “It’s difficult to imagine anyone being terribly upset by anything in The Devil Wears Prada 2. It’s pretty and polished and as featherweight as a fawning magazine puff piece; it will doubtless make a fortune.”

Nick Schager of The Daily Beast is among the top critics on RT who gives The Devil Wears Prada 2 a “rotten” review score, writing, “Despite looking great, it comes off as a humdrum knockoff of yesterday’s fashion.”

Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times isn’t a fan of The Devil Wears Prada 2, either. MacDonald writes in her “rotten” review summary on RT, “The Devil Wears Prada 2 gives us a lot to look at, and Hathaway and Blunt in particular are a pleasure, but it’s flat Champagne: maybe worth drinking in a pinch, but unsatisfying.”

William Bibbiani of The Wrap also knocks the film, writing in his “rotten” RT review summary, “We like to joke about how 'this meeting could have been an email' but if all The Devil Wears Prada 2 can offer is Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt on-screen together again, then this film could have been a Zoom call.”

Rated PG-13, The Devil Wears Prada 2 plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
