Pop music is notoriously fickle, and turnover in the genre can be rapid. Just when one artist breaks through and scores a career-making smash, they may not stick around for very long and remain the hitmakers the public quickly turned them into. Staying on top in pop music is difficult, and even those who manage several successful eras will often see their popularity wane.
Singer-songwriter Charlie Puth, once one of the hottest male artists in the top 40 pop space, is experiencing that tumble right now. The Grammy nominee recently released his fourth full-length, Whatever’s Clever!, and the set debuts on charts all around the world this week. While longtime fans of Puth were quick to snap up a copy of the project, it underperforms in the United Kingdom, marking a new low for the musician on the charts, even as it receives positive reviews from critics.
Whatever’s Clever! is Puth’s first full-length to completely miss the Official Albums chart, the U.K.-based tally that ranks the most consumed releases in the nation, regardless of how listeners hear the music, either by buying it or streaming it. Previously, Puth’s three albums, Nine Track Mind, Voicenotes, and his self-titled Charlie, all spent several frames on the tally. Each and every one of them broke into the top 10, with Voicenotes standing out as Puth’s highest-rising win, as it topped out at No. 4. Nine Track Mind, his debut set, peaked at No. 6, and Charlie lifted as high as No. 9.
While Whatever’s Clever! does not hit the main albums tally in the U.K., it does launch on a trio of rosters built around purchases. Puth’s latest opens at No. 24 on the Official Album Downloads list, No. 25 on the Official Albums Sales ranking, and No. 28 on the Official Physical Albums register.
Just as is the case on the Official Albums chart, Whatever’s Clever! is Puth’s first record to completely miss the top 10, but at least it starts off as a sales win. Once again, Voicenotes is his top performer. It stalled at No. 3 on the Official Albums Sales chart, the list of the bestselling titles in the U.K., and No. 4 on both the Official Album Downloads and Official Physical Albums lists.
Puth promoted Whatever’s Clever! with four singles, beginning with “Changes,” which dropped in mid-October of 2025. Throughout 2026, he has also delivered “Beat Yourself Up,” “Home” with Japanese musician Hikaru Utada, and “Sideways,” a collaboration with R&B superstar Coco Jones. Other tunes like “Cry,” which includes a saxophone solo by Kenny G, were also delivered before the full-length arrived.
Sadly, none of those songs reached any important rankings in the U.K. Puth hasn’t scored a hit on the Official Singles chart, the country’s rundown of the most consumed tracks, since May of 2024, when he joined South Korean boy band Stray Kids on “Lose My Breath.” No tunes from Whatever’s Clever! manage to take up space on any sales or streaming tallies either at the moment.
