David Kendall, ‘Boy Meets World’ And ‘Growing Pains’ Producer, Dies At 68

David Kendall, a writer, producer and director on such hit sitcoms as Boy Meets World and Growing Pains, and co-creator of the sitcom Melissa & Joey, has died.

Boy Meets World stars Rider Strong, Will Friedle and Danielle Fishel announced on the news of Kendall’s death on their Pod Meets World Instagram page on Saturday. He was 68. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

"To say that David Kendall was instrumental in the creation of Boy Meets World would be an understatement. He directed, wrote and executive produced our show, but also helped mold some of TV’s most memorable sitcoms, from Growing Pains to Hannah Montana,” a statement from the trio on Instagram reads. “In addition to helping develop Danielle, Will & Rider’s young creative voices (both as a co-worker and later mentor), he worked with stars like Austin Butler, Zendaya, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas brothers in the early stages of their careers.”

Kendell joined Boy Meets World as an executive producer in Season 2 of the coming-of-age comedy drama in 1994 and served in that capacity through the series seventh and final season in 2000. Kendall also wrote an episode for Boy Meets World in 1994 and directed 13 episodes of the sitcom from 1995 to 1999.

“We are devastated to lose such an important person in our lives, both professionally and personally. We all kept in touch with David over the past 30 years, and are honored that we were able to share his incredible personality with our Pod Meets World listeners,” the actors added in Saturday’s Instagram post. “We have lost a vital piece of our family - but we ask that the next time you watch the show, especially Seasons 2 & 3 (when he served as Showrunner), you think of our beloved Kendall.”

Born Oct. 2, 1957, in Philadelphia, Kendall broke into showbiz in 1983 as the writer and director of the G-rated comedy Luggage of the Gods! His debut as a producer came on the Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns and Kirk Cameron family sitcom Growing Pains, where he served as a co-executive producer and producer for Seasons 4-6 of the ABC series from 1988 to 1991. Kendell wrote 32 episodes during his tenure on the show. also was an executive producer and one of the writers on 2000’s The Growing Pains Movie.

Kendall also created and was a writer and executive producer on the hit ABC and ABC Family sitcom Melissa & Joey, starring Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. The series ran for 104 episodes over four seasons, from 2010 to 2015. In addition to his producing and writing duties, Kendall directed seven episodes of Melissa & Joey.

David Kendell Was Also A Prolfic Director

While David Kendell made a huge impact as a writer and producer, he also directed nearly four dozen TV shows during his career.

In addition to being at the helm of over a dozen Boy Meets World episodes, Kendall also directed episodes for the sitcoms Even Stevens, That’s So Raven, Phil of the Future, Hannah Montana, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, K.C. Undercover and Bizaardvark.

Kendall’s last credit as director was for an episode of the family comedy Erin & Aaron in 2023. Kendall’s last credit as a producer was for the Netflix series Ashley Garcia: Genius in Love in 2020.

In addition, to his television credits, Kendall directed the 2005 film comedy Dirty Deeds, starring Milo Ventimiglia, Lacey Chabert and Zoe Saldaña.
