There is nothing more binge-worthy than people behaving badly, which is why Netflix's hit series Beef became an instant hit when it premiered on April 6, 2023.

The first season, which was rooted in a real-life road-rage incident, resonated with viewers through its sharp, often darkly funny exploration of anger, reactivity, and human behavior at its worst. The emotionally raw, humanity-at-its-lowest premise proved both captivating and relatable. If we’re being honest, most of us have, at some point, acted in ways we wish we could undo.

Creator, showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer Lee Sung Jin (aka Sonny Lee) revealed at the season two premiere that he didn’t just witness the road rage incident that inspired season one; he was directly involved.

“Unfortunately, you know, someone honked at me and said some things, and I decided to follow them, but we were stuck in L.A. traffic, so I kind of lost interest,” Lee explained, adding that it didn't stop there.

“We were actually going in the same direction. I think, in his mind, he thought I was following him all the way from La Brea to Santa Monica. I just thought that was so funny. Here we are in our literal bubbles, with our own subjective experiences about what was happening. I thought there might be a show there.”

Season two, Lee added, also draws from real life. This time, he was an accidental eavesdropper on his neighbors' marital spat, and not directly involved in the real-life beef. While he remained protective of the specifics, the overheard incident was compelling enough to inspire an entirely new cast of characters and a fresh, chaotic storyline.

“I just happened to overhear a heated debate coming from a couple’s home in the neighborhood. I’ll speak vaguely, since I still live in said neighborhood, but I found that when I retold the story, my younger peers were aghast, whereas my similarly aged or older peers kind of shrugged," stated Lee. "I was like, ‘Everyone fights.’ And so I thought that juxtaposition was an interesting version.”

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun swept awards season for their performances in the first season of Netflix's 'Beef.'

Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, who both return as executive producers, season one quickly gained traction through strong word of mouth and social media buzz, sending the 10-episode debut to the top of Netflix’s charts.

The first season dominated the 2023-2024 awards season, winning major accolades, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. The show earned eight Emmys and set records. Yeun and Wong won in the lead acting categories, with Wong’s win marking the first for an Asian woman in that category. Lee won for directing and writing.

Beef also won at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards, while earning recognition from the PGA, WGA, and AFI. The series spent five consecutive weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, prompting the streamer to expand it into an anthology series with new characters and feuds.

Season two, which premiered on April 16 with eight episodes, is set against the backdrop of an elite California retreat, the fictional Monte Vista Point Country Club, where two couples become entangled in a high-stakes power struggle.

The new installment introduces a fresh ensemble cast, centering on a recently engaged Gen Z couple who witness a violent argument between their Millennial boss and his wife.

Ashley Miller (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin Davis (Charles Melton), lower-level employees at the exclusive club, become entangled in the unraveling marriage of General Manager Joshua Martin (Oscar Isaac) and his wife, Lindsay Crane-Martin (Carey Mulligan).

After witnessing one of the couple’s lowest moments, Ashley records the incident and uses it as leverage to blackmail them into higher-paying jobs with health insurance.

Meanwhile, both couples vie for the approval of the club’s billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung), who is grappling with a scandal involving her second husband, Doctor Kim (Song Kang-ho). This brilliant ensemble cast is rounded out by Seoyeon Jang (Eunice), Matthew Kim aka BM (Woosh), William Fichtner (Troy), and Mikaela Hoover (Ava).

This season, ants emerge as a recurring theme alongside another hive insect, bees. Their symbolism threads through the narrative, perhaps to evoke worker-like industriousness, or maybe Lee is hinting at a more insidious sense of internal rot. When asked as a final question, he deliberately left their meaning undefined. “That is left open to interpretation on purpose.”

Ultimately, Beef thrives on its exploration of humanity at its lowest, transforming real-life conflict into compelling, often uncomfortably funny television. These stories resonate because they reflect a universal truth in that, at any given moment, any of us could find ourselves caught in a life-altering conflict.

What matters most is what happens next. Do we surrender to reactivity or pause before things escalate? As the saying goes, revenge comes at a cost. Those who seek it should dig two graves, or in this case, four.
