Lee Cronin’s The Mummy opens in theaters this weekend, and Rotten Tomatoes critics are not entirely wrapped up in the Evil Dead Rise filmmaker’s horror thriller.

Written and directed by Cronin, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. The film stars Jack Reynor as Charlie Cannon, a journalist whose daughter, Katie (Natalie Grace), disappears without a trace in the desert. Eight years later, Charlie and his wife, Larissa (Laia Costa), learn that Katie has been discovered alive.

Charlie and Larissa immediately discover that Katie exists in a haunted, altered state and their reunion with the girl soon becomes a horrifying nightmare.

Produced by acclaimed horror filmmakers James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy also stars May Calamawy and Veronica Falcón.

The review embargo for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy lifted Thursday, and as of the publication of this article, the film has earned a 55% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer based on 67 reviews.

RT’s Critics Consensus, Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings are still pending.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’?

Donald Clarke of The Irish Times is among the top critics on RT who gives Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a “fresh” critics’ score. In his RT review summary, Clarke writes that the film is “a blast for those who like their horror propulsive, transgressive and (in a good way) nauseating. Cronin and his team haven’t quite solved the age-old problem of what to do with the Mummy, but they have confirmed that it remains a dilemma worth tackling.”

William Bibbiani of The Wrap also gives Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a “fresh” score. Bibbiani writes in his RT review summary that “Cronin has an uncanny knack for human mutilation, which would probably be a bad thing in any other context, but if you’re making gross-out horror movies, it’s practically a requirement.”

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also deems Lee Cronin’s The Mummy “fresh” on RT, writing in his review summary, “Even if it’s overlong, this is remarkably sustained lurid entertainment that offers a fresh take on the mummy myth.”

Katie Rife of Inverse also gives Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a “fresh” score. Rife writes in her RT review summary, “Across those three films Cronin has developed enough gruesome signatures that an adjective — Croninesque, maybe? — may yet be in his future, particularly if he keeps reinventing classic movie monsters in his own style like he does here.”

Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press is among the top critics on RT who gives Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a “rotten” score. Kennedy writes in his RT review summary, “In publicity material for the movie, Cronin reveals that he made his movie after realizing there hasn’t been a truly terrifying version made of The Mummy. He’s right. Even after his own offering.”

Megan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting isn’t fond of the movie either, writing in her “rotten” RT review summary, “Cronin’s latest is less a reinvention of the Mummy and more a standard possession horror movie with a slight Egyptian twist.”

While Tim Grierson of Screen International has some praise for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, he ultimately gives the film a “rotten” score. Grierson writes on RT, “Lee Cronin knows how to construct suspense sequences and ramp up tension ... But the film’s ambitious scope is betrayed by derivative genre ideas that make this tale of the dead disappointingly listless.”

David Ehrlich of IndieWire also gives Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a “rotten” score. Ehrlich writes in his RT review summary, “Everything Katie does has to be deniable enough for her parents to roll with it, a story choice that defangs Cronin’s ability to let loose. The jolts are muted, the set pieces are drab, and the gore is all too literally kept under wraps.”

Rated R, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
