South Asian/Bollywood cinema is coming in hard, especially after the first installment of the action drama Dhurandhar, the high-grossing Bollywood title on Netflix in North America. Dhurandhar spent 10 consecutive weeks in the Global Top 10 after its release. At the box office, it grossed $137.2 million worldwide.
Now, with its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, out on Netflix, it is expected to do even more numbers. The film was released in theaters in March, achieving its biggest theatrical success of the year in South Asia, and was available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. With only 987 theaters, it made $10 million that opening weekend, with and $153 million worldwide.
“The madness for Dhurandhar The Revenge has been unreal,” Dhar said in a press release. “Now, Hamza returns fiercer than ever with the Raw and [Unseen] Edition on Netflix."
The high-octane action drama from Jio Studios and B62 Studios stars Bollywood action star Ranveer Singh as the brave and sexy spy Hamza Ali Mazari, an undercover Indian intelligence agent who continues to infiltrate Karachi’s criminal syndicates and Pakistani politics, loosely inspired by real-life political events, including Operation Lyari, the 2014 Indian general election, and the 2016 Indian banknote demonetization.
In the first film, Dhurandhar, Hamza Ali Mazari is a secret agent looking for the perpetrators of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. He arrives in Lyari, a neighborhood in Karachi, Pakistan, going undercover as a waiter in the town, and quickly makes a name for himself after saving the youngest son of the local crime boss, who is recruited into the underworld.

Directed and written by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar: The Revenge reveals Hamza Ali Mazari’s true identity as Jaskirat Singh Rangi, a death-row inmate who was sentenced for rescuing his kidnapped sister and punishing the men who did her harm. Luckily, India’s intelligence bureau recruits him to become a spy for them – under the alias Hamza – to infiltrate the criminal organizations responsible for terrorist attacks against their country.
Now, nearly a decade later, Hamza is in the inner circle as the kingpin of the Baloch gang that rules the city of Karachi. As he attempts to get closer to the notorious Bade Sahab (Danish Iqbal), the man behind the 2008 Mumbai bombing, his identity runs the risk of being exposed when his past finds him.
Netflix releases the long-form extended version of the film, “Raw and Unseen," clocking in at 235 minutes (the original film was 229 minutes).
