Toy Story 5 isn’t taking long to boot Steven Spielberg’s alien thriller Disclosure Day out of the top spot at the domestic box office.

Directed by Spielberg, Disclosure Day defied pre-release projections last weekend and overperformed with a $44.5 million haul from 3,824 North American venues. By Thursday, the film boosted its domestic take to nearly $61.3 million. Combined with the film’s international ticket sales of $49.4 million, Disclosure Day has earned $110.7 million.

Scripted by David Koepp from Spielberg’s original story, Disclosure Day stars Josh O’Connor as Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert who has lifted sensitive files about alien contact with the government. Emily Blunt also stars as Margaret Fairchild, a TV meteorologist who goes viral after speaking an alien dialect live on the air, while Colin Firth plays the head of a non-governmental organization who tries to stop Daniel and Margaret from disclosing the existence of extraterrestrials to the masses.

After the film’s solid start the weekend of June 12-14, Disclosure Day is projected by Deadline to earn $16.5 million in its second weekend frame at the domestic box office, a 63% drop in business from its opening weekend. Should the projection hold, it will boost Disclosure Day’s 10-day domestic tally to $77.7 million.

Toy Story 5, meanwhile, is projected by Deadline to mow down all of its competition with an opening weekend take of anywhere between $160 million and $170 million from 4,425 North American theaters — more than enough to take away Disclosure Day’s box office crown after one week. As such, Disclosure Day is projected to drop to No. 2 domestically.

‘Disclosure Day’ Is In Better Shape Than ‘The Mandalorian’ And ‘MOTU’

While a 63% drop is rough for any new film in theaters, Disclosure Day is better equipped to weather the storm than a pair of other new releases since it has a production budget, per Variety, of $115 million and a marketing budget of $80 million.

By contrast, Disclosure Day’s tentpole predecessors this summer — Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe — have much larger production budgets and bigger drops in their second weekend frames at the domestic box office. The Mando movie took a 69% drop at the domestic box office in its second weekend, while Masters of the Universe skidded 71% in its second frame.

Not surprisingly, indie stalwarts Obsession and Backrooms are each hanging tough in theaters this weekend and are expected to finish at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Deadline projects Obsession will earn $13.1 million in its seventh weekend in theaters — a 31% drop from last weekend — to up its running domestic total to $214.7 million.

Writer-director Curry Barker’s $750,000 film hit a couple of major milestones this week, first on Monday by becoming the highest-grossing festival acquisition of all time over 1999’s The Blair Witch Project. Then on Thursday, Obsession crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office, setting yet another record for Focus Features, which acquired the horror thriller at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Obsession is playing in 3,053 theaters this weekend.

Director Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, meanwhile, is projected by Deadline to earn $7.5 million from 2,851 North American venues, which is a 35% drop in business from last weekend. Should the projection hold, it will boost the running domestic tally of the $10 million to $175.3 million as it enters its fourth week in theaters.

The trade publication projects that the Wayans bros.’ horror spoof Scary Movie will finish at No. 5 this weekend with $7 million in ticket sales from 3,490 theaters — a 51% drop from the film’s second weekend take. Should the projection hold, it will boost Scary Movie’s running domestic tally to $97.9 million.

Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new information becomes available. The final numbers from this weekend’s box office will be released on Monday.
