Vietnamese superstar, Sơn Tùng M-TP, is crossing over with Western artists, teaming up with American rap artist Tyga on their new single, “Come My Way,” released this past weekend on all streaming platforms. The song was written and composed by Son Tung M-TP, Tyga, and Grammy-nominated producer Marvey Muziqyue.

Known as the “Prince of V-pop” or “King of V-Pop” (of this generation), the 31-year-old singer-songwriter and actor has dominated the music scene in Asia since his 2011 debut, consistently topping Vietnamese music charts. His distinct style centers on Vietnamese folk music blended with R&B, soul, hip-hop, pop music, hyper-pop, EDM, and tropical house, creating a refreshing sound and approach that pays homage to his culture.

Combine Sơn Tùng M-TP’s sound with the multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated rapper’s West Coast hip-hop and party rap style, and you get a fresh and smooth R&B hit, mixed with Afrobeats and bouncy hooks and rhythm that flow easily throughout its three-minute, 11-second track. The collaboration feels like a perfect fit, as it bridges Sơn Tùng M-TP’s global expansion and American hip-hop, especially with Tyga’s mixed Vietnamese heritage, giving the song a deeper connection to the music and culture. Also, introducing newcomers to Vietnamese music, culture, and pride.

“Working with Sơn Tùng M-TP on this record felt natural because it gave me a chance to reconnect with a side of my heritage that’s always been part of me,” says Tyga. “Growing up half-Vietnamese, I’ve always had pride in that identity, and being able to celebrate it through music on a global record like this just felt right. What we created brings different cultures together in a way that feels authentic to both of us.”

The music video, filmed in Downtown Los Angeles and Vietnam, showcases the two worlds Sơn Tùng M-TP and Tyga live in. Sơn Tùng M-TP is standing on a bronze Chim Lạc, an ancient bird of Vietnam, as it floats through the streets of Downtown Los Angeles. The scene alternates between him on a platform with dancers wearing Xuân Phả folk masks, set against the beautiful landscape of Trang An in Ninh Binh Province. There are quick motifs of Sơn Tùng M-TP riding an ox, paying tribute to the Bay Nui Ox Racing Festival in An Giang province. With Tyga, it plays like an American hip-hop music video with a DeLorean DMC-12 on the rooftop in Downtown LA – then crosses both cultures, with the DeLorean and Chim Lạc parked side by side.

There are so many homages to Sơn Tùng M-TP’s country, including the jade water buffalo, Vietnam’s national animal, which symbolizes wealth and prosperity. The technological elements on the statue he’s sitting on could represent Vietnam's future, including his collaboration with Tyga. Not to mention, his very stylish Áo Dài (traditional Vietnamese outfit).

Sơn Tùng M-TP says, “Collaborating with Tyga felt special because this song represents more than just music, as it’s a cultural connection. I really respected how open he was about embracing his Vietnamese heritage through this project, and that made our collaboration feel genuine from the beginning. With Afrobeats as the foundation, we wanted to create something global while still carrying pieces of who we are and where we come from.”

With Asian pop artists like BTS, Lisa, Arijit Singh, BINI, no na, and more taking over international charts, many are showcasing their cultural heritage through their music and music videos, incorporating traditional folk songs and instruments. BTS included their national folk song, “Arirang,” into their track, “Body to Body,” and named their album after it. Lisa has featured Thailand and its culture in her solo debut music video, “Lalisa,” wearing a full traditional Thai outfit. Now, Sơn Tùng M-TP is bringing Vietnamese culture to Western media.

Tyga is not the first American artist that Sơn Tùng M-TP has worked with. He’s previously collaborated with Snoop Dogg on his 2019 track, “Give It To Me,” which featured an appearance by singer Madison Beer in the music video. Sơn Tùng M-TP states that “he wants to continue to push his music beyond borders” and “hopes to share a message with audiences everywhere to never stop chasing your dreams, no matter how impossible or unconventional they may seem.”

Sơn Tùng M-TP x TYGA’s “Come My Way” is out now on all streaming platforms.
