Normal, starring Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk, is new in theaters this weekend and Rotten Tomatoes critics are mostly on board with the actor’s latest action comedy.

Apart from playing Saul Goodman, Odenkirk, of course, expanded his creative wings by starring as an unlikely anti-hero Hutch Mansell in Nobody (2021) and Nobody 2. The scripts for the Nobody films were written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, who teamed with Odenkirk to write the story for Normal while Kolstad wrote the screenplay.

Directed by Ben Wheatley, Normal opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. In the film, Odenkirk stars as Ulysses Richardson, who, stifled by nightmares of a past incident, takes a job as the interim sheriff in the remote town of Normal, Minn., after their previous top lawman dies.

Everything seems “Minnesota Nice” at first in Normal for Ulysses, as he’s welcomed with open arms by the town’s mayor (Henry Winkler), a local barkeep (Lena Heady) and the employees of the sheriff’s department. However, when a pair of out-of-towners attempt to rob the town’s bank, Ulysses realizes that not everything in Normal is as normal as it seems.

As of Thursday afternoon, Normal has earned a 76% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, based on 82 reviews.

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Normal thrives on Bob Odenkirk's gruff yet playful presence and director Ben Wheatley's over-the-top carnage, delivering simple, ridiculous, and consistently entertaining thrills despite its familiar premise.”

RT’s Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings are still pending.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Normal’?

Peter Debruge of Variety is among the top critics on RT who gives Normal a “fresh” score. Debruge writes in his RT review summary, “Kolstad’s script may be a recipe for carnage, but it takes a kitchen master like Wheatley to turn that into such a deliciously excessive spread.”

Chase Hutchinson of The Wrap also gives Normal a “fresh” score, writing in his RT review summary, “As long as Odenkirk’s grumpy sheriff has his coffee and mustache intact, he is the key to finding the perfect balance. No matter how many blows the film and he take, the joy in seeing him swing freely makes it all good, family fun.”

Justin Clark of Slant Magazine also awards Normal a "fresh” score. Clark writes on RT, “Bob Odenkirk, doubling down on the volatility of his performance in Nobody, flits back and forth between taciturn badass and genuinely kind-hearted bear in the blink of an eye.”

Jake Coyle of The Associated Press has reservations about Normal but still gives the film a “fresh” score. Coyle writes in his RT review, “Many of its twists aren’t hard to see coming, and the movie sometimes lacks the scale needed for a sprawling battle. But a mustachioed Odenkirk with a shotgun is, by most metrics, more than enough firepower for any movie.”

Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine/Vulture is among the top critics on RT who gives Normal a “rotten” score, writing, “Maybe the meaninglessness is the point. I was never bored by Normal, but I’d also be lying if I said I was ever excited by it.”

Mark Feeney of the Boston Globe also gives Normal a “rotten” score. Feeny writes in his RT review summary, “The extended reveal of the abnormality wastes much of what was good about the first half of the movie. More generally, it drowns the movie in — you guessed it — ketchup.”

Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com isn’t a fan of Normal, either. Tallerico writes in his “rotten” RT review summary, “There are a lot of booms and bangs in Normal, but it’s all woefully underlit and much of it is poorly edited too.”

Tim Grierson of Screen International also deems Normal “rotten.” Grierson writes in his RT review summary, “Offering wan satire about the small-mindedness of Midwestern communities while making halfhearted stabs at poignancy once Ulysses begins to regain his sense of purpose, this shoot-‘em-up mostly fires blanks.”

Rated R, Normal opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
