Prince’s Purple Rain has ranked as one of the most critically-acclaimed and bestselling albums since its release in the ’80s, and even decades after it dropped, it proves tough to beat on the charts. The late superstar finds his way back to No. 1 on a United Kingdom music ranking with the Grammy- and Oscar-winning soundtrack, which also surges onto multiple rosters, becoming a bestseller once more.
Purple Rain is once again in charge of the Official Soundtrack Albums chart, which lists the bestselling projects connected to a film, TV, or stage-based project. Prince rocks from No. 3 back to the highest spot.
As of this period, Purple Rain has ruled the Official Soundtrack Albums chart just nine times. That would be an incredibly impressive accumulation for many titles, but looking at how long Purple Rain has spent on the tally, it’s shocking that it hasn’t dominated more often. Purple Rain recently reached 1,000 weeks on the soundtracks-only roster.
Purple Rain debuted on the Official Soundtrack Albums ranking in January 2002, and since then, it has fallen off of and then returned to the chart dozens of times. It wasn’t until May 2016 that Purple Rain finally rocked its way to No. 1 following his unexpected and tragic passing. Purple Rain bolted to the penthouse and held there for half a dozen frames. The set was last seen in the top spot in May of last year, and it has largely been living inside the top 10 ever since.
According to the Official Charts Company, Prince has seen five projects land on the Official Soundtrack Albums chart, though three of them are versions of Purple Rain. From time to time, the same title can appear multiple times on the same roster depending on how it is named and how much material is featured on a product.
Another version of Purple Rain – credited to Prince and the Revolution instead of the original, which only names Prince – arrived in May 2017. A third landed on the list for just one period at No. 10 in November 2024.
Two additional releases by Prince, Batman and Graffiti Bridge, have also hit the Official Soundtrack Albums chart. The first of those two, which accompanied the movie of the same name, peaked at No. 4, while Graffiti Bridge missed the top 10 by two spaces.
“Purple Rain” – the single – can also be found on multiple charts across the Atlantic. This frame, Prince and the Revolution climb to No. 4 on the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Singles tally. The track is also a win when it comes to purchases, as it settles at No. 92 on the Official Singles Downloads roster. Plays on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music are also fairly strong, as the smash declines just four pegs to No. 88 on the Official Streaming chart.
