3 Met Gala 2026 Beauty Trends Redefining Luxury on the Red Carpet

As the Met Gala returned to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, beauty once again took centre stage. Unlike more traditional red-carpet events, the Met Gala thrives on experimentation, in which makeup, skincare, and hair become part of the wider visual narrative.

Amplified across social media within seconds, the Met Gala red carpet has now become one of the beauty industry’s most influential moments, often shaping trends for the season ahead.

This year followed the same trajectory. The dress code was fully embraced by designers, hairstylists and makeup artists alike. “This year’s theme, ‘Fashion is Art’, was very exciting,” said Johan Hellstrom, hairdresser and owner of Björn Axén. “When the dress code itself declares that fashion is art, hair has no choice but to follow—and we saw sculptural, expressive and fearless hair moments.”

From skin-first beauty to statement eyes and soft individualism, these were the leading beauty trends that defined the 2026 Met Gala red carpet.

Complexion Over Perfection

This year’s beauty direction placed clear emphasis on skin health. The dominant focus was preparation as much as presentation, with luminous, healthy-looking skin defining many of the standout looks.

Many of the most striking looks began long before primer or foundation were applied. Skincare preparation became just as important as the final makeup result, reflecting a wider industry movement toward skin longevity rather than cosmetic quick fixes.

Increasingly, celebrity facialists and dermatologists are central to achieving camera-ready radiance. “The modern luxury is healthy skin, strong facial structure and an overall sense of vitality,” said London-based aesthetic doctor Dr Paris. “Patients want fresher skin, better-quality tissue and subtle support that photographs beautifully both on and off camera.”

This shift is reflected in the expanding market for at-home beauty devices, valued at $7.56 billion in 2026 and, according to Business Research Insights, forecast to reach $17.34 billion by 2035, representing a 9.67% CAGR over the period.

Sophie Smith, co-founder of Grand Aesthetics, told me that at-home devices such as LED light masks are becoming increasingly mainstream, allowing consumers to maintain professional-level results between appointments. “I like using LED (like LUSTRE LED), because it helps keep inflammation down and just keeps the skin clear and settled,” she explained. “You want the skin looking good before makeup even goes on, so everything sits better on the day.”

Clean, performance-led beauty brands are also benefiting from this trend. Labels such as Huda Beauty and Supergoop! are leaning into skin-tint, SPF-led and hybrid complexion formulas that prioritize natural skin texture over full coverage.

Natalie Guselli, head of beauty at Liberty, told me that the era of full-coverage complexion is definitely evolving. “At Liberty, it’s one of the clearest shifts we’re seeing, with tinted moisturizer sales up 89% year-on-year, and high-precision concealer products, +81%,” she said. “Customers are moving towards formulas that allow natural skin texture to remain visible—it’s less about masking the skin and more about enhancing it in a way that feels individual and authentic.”

Carolina Benita—Global Lead Makeup Artist at CAIA Cosmetics—agrees. She told me that we’re moving away from overly perfected looks and toward skin that feels healthy, plump and real. “It’s about hydration, luminosity and creating glow through thin layers. When skin looks nourished, everything else becomes secondary,” she added.

The Rise of Soft Monochrome

As consumers seek simplicity without compromising results, there is a growing demand for multi-use, intuitive products that streamline beauty routines.

“Blurred lips and cheeks in the same tonal family are defining the modern makeup look,” says Carolina Benita. “This monochromatic approach creates harmony across the face while still feeling effortless. It’s less about precision and more about a diffused, lived-in softness.”

Global makeup artist for YSL Beauty, Sam Visser, agrees, adding that it’s about evolving traditional glamour into something deeply expressive and unexpected. “We are treating the skin like a masterpiece, using color and textures as a medium to provoke and inspire,” he says.

Natalie Guselli adds that evolving textures are reshaping application techniques. “We’re seeing a shift in how makeup is applied, driven by formulas that allow color to feel more instinctive. Rather than being placed with precision, it is tapped, smudged and diffused—particularly across the lips—creating a softer, more lived-in finish.”

Subtle Eyes, Strong Impact

“Eyes are becoming more understated, but not forgotten,” says Benita. “Soft washes of color, delicate definition and barely-there liner enhance the eyes without overpowering the face. It’s a shift toward balance rather than statement.” Here, expression is built through nuance rather than bold uniform trends.

Guselli tells me that with complexion trends continuing toward lighter, more refined finishes, eye makeup is evolving in parallel. “We’re seeing a renewed focus on the eyes, but in a more fluid, buildable way. It’s less about sharp definition and more about layering texture and tone—soft smudged liners, shadow sticks and diffused pigments.”

The result is impact without rigidity. “It gives the eye presence without feeling overworked. The shift is away from perfection and toward personality—beauty that feels intuitive, adaptable and more reflective of the individual,” she concludes.
