The Michael Jackson biopic Michael is projected to pass the half-billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office this weekend.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jermaine Jackson’s son/Michael Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the title role, Michael roared out of the gate in its opening weekend frame from April 24-26 with a $217 million worldwide debut, followed by a second weekend global haul of nearly $135 million.

As of Wednesday, Michael — which chronicles the King of Pop’s career from age 10 with his brothers in The Jackson Five through the Bad album tour in 1988 — earned nearly $195.2 million domestically and $246 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $441.2 million to date.

Even though The Devil Wears Prada 2 knocked Michael off the top of the box office perch last weekend and a formidable competitor in Mortal Kombat II opens on Friday, Michael is still poised to cross a major box office milestone.

The King Of Pop’s biopic is expected to earn $30 million in North American ticket sales and $50 million internationally for a global weekend tally of $80 million, projected by Deadline.

Should the projection hold, Michael, along with Thursday’s ticket sales, will end up somewhere beyond a conservative estimate of $520 million, or as much as $525 million to $530 million by Sunday.

Even if ticket sales come in on the lower side, Box Office Pro projects a $25 million to $30 third weekend domestically for Michael, which will still be enough to push the film past the $500 million mark.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ And ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Are Battling It Out For The Domestic Box Office Crown

Combined with numbers from Thursday previews, Mortal Kombat II — a sequel to the 2021 adaptation of the blockbuster video game — is projected by Deadline to make as much as $50 million domestically, while the trade publication pegs a finish in the low $40 million range for The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Box Office Pro, however, is projecting a much tighter race, pegging a $40 million to $45 million opening weekend for Mortal Kombat II, and a $38 million to $43 million second weekend for the Meryl Streep-Anne Hathaway sequel.

Even if Prada 2 cedes the domestic box office crown to Mortal Kombat II, the film is expected to continue to rule the box office worldwide. Deadline projects an international box office take of $65 million to $75 million in The Devil Wears Prada 2’s second weekend, which, combined with its domestic projection, would give the film a global tally of $107 million to $117 million.

Also opening in theaters this weekend is the Hugh Jackman family-friendly comedy The Sheep Detectives, which is projected by Deadline to earn $12 million-plus domestically. The concert movie Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard & Soft the Tour Live in 3D – which is co-directed by James Cameron and Eilish — is also new, and the trade publication projects it will earn anywhere from $6 million to $9 million in its debut weekend.
