The Devil Wears Prada 2 will likely dominate this weekend's global box office, as the highly anticipated sequel to the original, which arrives 20 years after the first comedy brought the bestselling novel to the big screen, is tracking to bring in nearly $200 million all around the world. The film comes accompanied by a soundtrack that is largely composed of previously-released tunes from names like Olivia Dean, SZA, and Raye, but that's not what makes the project exciting.
Lady Gaga wrote and recorded three original songs, while rising newcomer Sienna Spiro also penned a new track for the full-length. All three of Gaga's compositions become bestsellers in the U.S., and any number of them might soar onto Billboard charts in only a matter of days.
Less than a month ago, Gaga dropped "Runway," the first single from the then-forthcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack. The club-ready cut is a collaboration with Grammy-winning hip-hop superstar Doechii, and it earned both women a smash on a number of dance rankings in America.
"Runway" is still the biggest hit for either Gaga or Doechii on the iTunes Top Songs chart, which ranks the bestselling tunes on the platform in the U.S., and it manages to appear twice. One version of "Runway" dips to No. 22, while a second launches at No. 174.
Another two tracks – solo affairs by Gaga that the public has never heard before – expectedly become bestsellers and instant top 40 successes. "Shape of a Woman" and "Glamorous Life" nearly sit side-by-side as they debut at No. 30 and No. 32, respectively.
Gaga, who reportedly appears in The Devil Wears Prada 2, lands five wins on the iTunes Top Songs tally. In addition to her soundtrack songs, "Die With a Smile," her Grammy-winning, career-defining collaboration with Bruno Mars, remains a bestseller in America, and it settles at No. 122.
In some instances, The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack is credited simply to various artists, as is often the case when it comes to albums attached to movies. On the iTunes Top Albums chart, however, the three women who recorded original songs for the set are named specifically.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 launches on the iTunes Top Albums ranking, which looks at the bestselling full-lengths and EPs on the download storefront in the U.S. alone, at No. 16. Gaga, Doechii, and Spiro — but oddly not “various artists” as well — all claim the win.
Fridays are the most exciting day to look at either iTunes tally, as that is when most major artists release new songs and albums. Gaga's "Shape of a Woman" and "Glamorous Life" are the eighth- and ninth-highest-ranking new arrivals on the iTunes Top Songs chart as of the time of publishing. The list is led by "Bring Your Love," a team-up between Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter. Cody Johnson, as well as Dirty Heads – the band collects two new bestsellers inside the loftiest region on the ranking – also launch singles within the top 10.
Over on the iTunes Top Albums chart, The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack is the fifth-highest-rising new entry. Gaga, Doechii, and Spiro land behind Sevendust’s One (No. 2), Kacey Musgraves’s Middle of Nowhere (No. 4), It’s Been Awful by Isaiah Rashad (No. 8), and In Times of Dragons, the latest project by Tori Amos. That full-length begins its time on the tally just one slot ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
