Netflix’s latest true-crime series is based on an unthinkable question: What would you do if the man you were engaged to confessed to murder? For Scottish native Dr. Caroline Muirhead, that question became reality when her fiancé made a chilling confession shortly after proposing.
The unsettling case is the focus of Netflix’s new three-part docuseries, Should I Marry a Murderer?, which quickly rose to No. 1 on the platform’s TV chart following its release. Muirhead is interviewed in the series alongside friends and family, as well as the case’s lawyers and investigators.
A forensic pathologist from Glasgow, Scotland, Muirhead had recently ended an almost 10-year relationship when, in 2020, she came across Alexander “Sandy” McKellar, a rugged game hunter, on Tinder.
The outdoorsman lived and worked on the 9,000-acre Auch Estate in Argyll, Scotland. In October 2020, she drove to the Scottish Highlands to meet him, the first of many trips of more than an hour from Glasgow.
The pair quickly fell in love, and within a few months, he proposed, shocking Muirhead’s family and friends, who were concerned the relationship was moving too fast. Before moving forward with marriage, Muirhead asked her fiancé to be fully honest about his past.
“If we’re going to get married, you need to be able to tell me everything you’re proud of, and you need to be able to tell me everything you’re not proud of,” she recalled telling him in the docuseries. What followed was a confession that would change everything: McKellar confessed to a horrific crime he and his brother had committed three years earlier.

Sandy McKellar confessed to Muirhead that he had been involved in a hit-and-run accident in his truck three years earlier. After a night of drinking, he told her he had struck 63-year-old Tony Parsons. His brother, Robert McKellar, was in the passenger seat.
Parsons was a Royal Navy veteran and prostate cancer survivor who was in the middle of a 100-mile charity ride from Fort William back to his hometown of Tillicoultry, according to A&E Investigates.
Instead of calling first responders, he told Muirhead that he and his brother had buried Parsons’ body in a Peat Bog on the Auch Estate. Muirhead later learned from Robert that Parsons was actually alive after the accident, according to the docuseries.
After grappling with what she’s learned, Muirhead knows she needs to go to the police. She finally decides to contact Scottish authorities after McKellar asked her to help move the body. He claimed that the estate’s owner planned to excavate the land to build condominiums where Parsons was buried.

Investigators asked Muirhead to identify where Parsons’ body was buried, a key piece of evidence that would lead to charges against the McKellar brothers. Police assured her that her identity would remain confidential and that her fiancé would not know she had come forward. Fearing for her safety, she returned to the Auch Estate and left a crushed sugar-free Red Bull can at the location McKellar had described, helping investigators pinpoint the burial site.
Although Sandy and Robert are arrested shortly after Muirhead’s report, they are released soon after. Parsons’ body has not yet been found, and there is not enough evidence to charge them at that time.
Fearing for her safety, Muirhead pretends everything is normal and continues dating Sandy. Her mental health declines amid an alleged lack of support and resources from Scottish police, but she continues to gather crucial evidence that investigators could use at trial, including secretly recording confessions from the brothers.
The McKellar twins were arrested again in December 2020. Once Parsons’ body was recovered, it was found to have “suffered catastrophic rib, pelvic and spine fractures following the collision,” according to Glasgow Times. Without medical help, prosecutor Alex Prentice KC said Parsons was unlikely to have survived more than 20 to 30 minutes with those types of injuries.
Following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow, the McKellar brothers were sentenced in August 2023 to a combined total of 17 years and three months in prison, according to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
Sandy McKellar pled guilty to culpable homicide rather than murder, avoiding a life sentence in Scottish prison. He received a 12-year sentence. His brother, Robert McKellar, was sentenced to five years and three months for attempting to conceal the crime. Both are currently serving their sentences.
“These brothers failed in their attempts to obstruct and evade justice,” Ruth McQuaid, Procurator Fiscal for High Court, Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said in a statement. “These were heinous and calculating crimes which brought untold distress to Mr Parsons’ wife, children, and grandchildren.”
The Parsons family also won a six-figure settlement in 2025. BBC News reported that the family agreed to the settlement with McKellar’s car insurer a day before a trial was set to begin at the Court of Session.

After the trial, Muirhead relocated from Glasgow to the seaside. She has been open about her struggles with substance use after Sandy’s confession, and she has since become sober. According to Netflix Tudum, she is in a committed relationship and is “focused on rebuilding the bonds with loved ones that were fractured during her engagement.”
“Making the documentary meant revisiting the darkest of times, and none of that was easy,” Caroline told Netflix. “But it has also been a cathartic experience. For the first time in several years, I now have hope for the future and the freedom to begin the next chapter of my life.”
