It’s been more than three decades since Nirvana released its last studio album In Utero. In the 30-plus years since then, the grunge superstars have unveiled multiple live albums, compilations, and box sets, but whether any project with the name Nirvana on it will emerge in the future is hard to predict, as it’s likely that the group doesn’t have much unknown material left to share.
Multiple titles by Nirvana typically appear on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart in the United Kingdom, which houses some of the most successful collections in those styles. As is often the case, several full-lengths by the band take up space on that tally, and as one favorite returns, another celebrates reaching an impressive milestone.
MTV Unplugged in New York, Nirvana’s first live set – and the only one from the rockers to win a Grammy (it claimed Best Alternative Music Performance in 1996) – climbs from No. 28 to No. 25 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. The project, which was released less than a year after Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s death, has now spent 900 weeks as one of the most popular rock, alternative, hard rock, or metal full-lengths in the U.K.
For most rock acts, seeing a set spend 900 weeks on the Official Rock & Metal Albums tally — or on any roster, for that matter — would be a once-in-a-lifetime sight, but not for Nirvana. MTV Unplugged in New York is the second collection by the Grammy winners to appear on the list for at least that long.
Nevermind continues to hold as Nirvana’s longest-charting success, and it is in a very distant first place. Nevermind will celebrate 1,500 periods as a top seller in those styles in less than a month – a milestone it is almost certain to reach, since it rarely, if ever, disappears.
MTV Unplugged in New York is one of three titles by Nirvana that can be found on this frame’s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. Nevermind climbs from No. 10 to No. 6, while the live effort grows only slightly. In Utero reenters the tally at No. 38, in third-to-last place.

Since first hitting the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart in 1994 – only a few months after Cobain’s passing – Nirvana has racked up four champions. MTV Unplugged in New York, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, and the group’s self-titled compilation all managed two turns at the peak position. Nevermind has spent 24 of its almost 1,500 frames running the show. Several other releases, including In Utero, With the Lights Out, and Live at Reading, stalled in the runner-up spot.
This week, both MTV Unplugged in New York and In Utero only make space on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, while Nevermind can be found on five rosters in total. The blockbuster returns to both the Official Vinyl Albums and Official Albums Downloads tallies, surging its way to Nos. 35 and 92, respectively. Nevermind also sits just outside the top 40 on both the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales rundowns as well.
Nirvana’s namesake compilation, released after Cobain’s death, does not land on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, but it does mount perhaps an even more impressive return on another roster. Nirvana is back on the Official Albums list, the most competitive of all the albums tallies in the U.K. This frame, shortly after celebrating 200 turns as one of the 100 most-consumed releases in the nation, it can be found at No. 99.
Nirvana also appears on the Official Albums Streaming chart, dipping to No. 85, though it should be mentioned that none of the group’s other full-lengths are current streaming smashes.
