When The Killers released “Mr. Brightside,” the rock band from Las Vegas probably had no idea that a historic smash had just been released into the world. The song served as the troupe’s debut single, and it fronted its first album, Hot Fuss.
Since “Mr. Brightside” arrived on the Official Singles chart, the United Kingdom’s list of the most-consumed songs in that country, it has continued to find space week after week, month after month, and year after year. As of this frame, the beloved composition reaches a milestone that few people – especially those that closely follow the U.K. charts – could have predicted any track would ever even come close to.
On this week’s Official Singles chart, “Mr. Brightside” celebrates making it to 500 weeks. For nearly a decade on and off, The Killers’ track has ranked as one of the most popular cuts in the country, and it is unlikely to fall away at any time soon. This frame, “Mr. Brightside” steps up just one peg and settles at No. 49.
Unsurprisingly, “Mr. Brightside” is the first song to make it to 500 weeks on the Official Singles chart. It has long ranked as the sturdiest hit of all time, and it faces no real competition for that honor.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved,” which followed “Mr. Brightside” by more than a decade, continues to hold as the second-longest-charting tune in U.K. history, but it pales in comparison to The Killers’ smash. “Someone You Loved,” which is not present on the main songs tally at the moment, is nearing half a decade on the list, as it is currently up to 258 turns on the roster.
While “Mr. Brightside” may be the longest-charting song in the history of the Official Singles ranking, it is not one of the highest-rising. The track, which brought The Killers to the tally for only the second time when it debuted – following “Somebody Told Me” – barely managed to break into the top 10, as it stalled in tenth place. “Somebody Told Me,” meanwhile, soared as high as No. 3, though it only managed 31 turns on the tally.
“Mr. Brightside” is in the midst of a very exciting period on the U.K. charts, and not solely because of its landmark achievement on the Official Singles ranking. The track pushes to No. 26 on the Official Streaming list, where it has yet to enter the top 10.
At the same time, “Mr. Brightside” reappears on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles Sales charts, ranking as a top seller more than two decades after its release. This time around, “Mr. Brightside” is back at No. 85 on the roster that looks only at the top-performing downloads and at No. 95 on the Official Singles Sales chart.

“Mr. Brightside” has lived on all four tallies on which it currently appears for hundreds of weeks, though it has easily spent the most time on the Official Singles chart. The early career win is up to 433 turns on the Official Streaming ranking, 313 on the Official Singles Downloads tally, and 157 — just over three years — as one of the top-selling tunes of any genre and via any format throughout the U.K.
“Mr. Brightside” may have originally helped Hot Fuss become a hugely successful album all around the world, but these days, on the U.K. charts, it largely powers the group’s greatest hits compilation, Rebel Diamonds. It’s common for one popular song, or perhaps several, to fuel a collection of singles, as opposed to the original album that they were featured on. As many casual listeners return to compilations on streaming platforms this week, Rebel Diamonds inches one space to No. 67 on the Official Albums Streaming chart, while simultaneously rocking from No. 89 to No. 71 on the Official Albums list.
