Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., lost his primary Tuesday, the latest symbol of President Donald Trump’s influence over his party as Trump campaigned aggressively against Massie, who has warred with Trump for years.

Massie had 46% of votes when the Associated Press called the race and his Trump-backed challenger, retired Navy SEAL captain Ed Gallrein, had 54%.
The race was the latest notable test of Trump’s influence—Trump scored a victory on Saturday when Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., lost his primary to Trump-backed challenger Rep. Julia Letlow, after Cassidy voted to convict Trump following his 2021 impeachment.
With $32 million in ad spending, the race was the most expensive House primary in history, as pro-Israel donors, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other pro-Israel groups, poured millions into ads that have attacked Massie for his opposition to U.S. aid to Israel, among other votes against pro-Israel measures, Politico reported.
Trump’s vengeance campaign against Massie dates back to his first term and has grown deeper during his second term as Massie co-sponsored legislation to force the release of the Epstein files, has criticized the war against Iran, and voted against Trump’s signature policy bill last year, among other Trump-backed measures.
Trump was so eager to oust Massie he has said he just wanted a “warm body” to beat him, though he has promoted Gallrein’s credentials, calling him “a winner who will not let you down” in a Truth Social post on Monday.
The winner of Tuesday’s primary is likely to win the general election in November, as the Fourth District, which covers northern Kentucky along the Ohio and Indiana borders, leans solidly Republican.
“The worst Congressman in the long and storied history of the Republican Party, is Thomas Massie. He is an obstructionist and a fool. Vote him out of office tomorrow,” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social.
Massie has argued his votes against pro-Israel measures are in protest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies and in line with his isolationist philosophy and general opposition to U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts. “I vote against sanctions, I vote against limitations on free speech, and I love against foreign aid,” Massie told McClatchy in 2024. “And I vote against wars, and the problem is, AIPAC is for all of those things.” He accused his critics in a recent interview with Politico of “trying to equate criticism of the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu with antisemitism.”
Massie co-sponsored the Epstein Files Transparency Act alongside Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., last year, forcing the Justice Department to release the files despite Trump’s resistance. Massie has repeatedly blasted the Trump administration’s handling of the documents, arguing that the Justice Department should reverse some of the redactions and resume investigating potential co-conspirators. Massie sparred with then-Attorney General Pam Bondi during a congressional hearing in February, pressing her about who is responsible for redactions of some high-profile Trump affiliates from the files, including billionaire Les Wexner. Massie has said he won’t approve of the Justice Department’s handling of its Epstein investigation until the victims of Epstein are satisfied with the document release.
Massie, elected to Congress in 2012, has warred with Trump since his first term, when the president called for him to be thrown out of the Republican Party after Massie voted against a COVID-19 relief package. He has continued to be a thorn in Trump’s side, criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files, voting against Trump’s tariff and his signature policy bill last year, arguing it would increase the federal deficit. Massie has argued his politics are inherently “America First” and that younger MAGA Republicans are more likely to support him, aligning with Trump-allies-turned foes like former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Tucker Carlson. Massie has survived primary challenges and opposition from pro-Israel groups in the past, including in 2024, when he won his primary with 76% of the votes. Surveys going into Tuesday’s primary were split—Massie’s campaign said internal polling showed the race deadlocked, though some surveys showed Gallrein ahead.
