Though better known for their efforts to acquire tenured stars, the New York Yankees have earmarked some key prospects from their farm system in recent seasons.

After being promoted to the big-league team in 2023, Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove in his rookie season and appeared to be in line to take over as the franchise shortstop. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez has enjoyed several cups of coffee in the big leagues as the team looks to harness his power. And on Friday, fans got their first chance to see Spencer Jones in the big leagues.

“The Yankees have dreamed upon this for years: An outfield stocked with towering sluggers Aaron Judge and Spencer Jones, a pair of 6-foot-7 mashers obliterating balls from opposite sides of the plate,” Bryan Hoch wrote for MLB.com. “That vision will become reality this weekend. The Yankees officially called up Jones, the organization’s No. 6 prospect, on Friday morning.”

New York Yankees’ Former Prospect Anthony Hall Leaves MLB

Jones started his debut off slowly, with no hits in his first five at-bats. But as the Yankees look for him to realize his potential as their next key homegrown talent, they’ve gotten an update on another who they cut ties with less than a year ago.

Earlier this week, the American Association baseball league announced that former Yankees prospect Anthony Hall had joined the Sioux Falls Canaries.

“The Canaries play in the American Association, a 12-team independent professional league that frequently courts former major leaguers looking to make a comeback,” J.P. Hoornstra reported for The Big Lead. “In Hall’s case, he’ll look to launch a career that never really took off with the Yankees despite his relatively high draft position.”

New York Yankees Cut Ties With Anthony Hall After Injury Setbacks

Hall was drafted in 2019 by the Atlanta Braves before opting to play at the University of Oregon instead. He then entered the draft again and was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round.

In four minor-league seasons with the organization, Hall slashed .234/.333/.358, reaching High-A in last season before being released by the Yankees. He was placed on the injured list three different times in that span and health concerns might have been factored into the Yankees decision to cut ties with him.

“The Yankees were pleased to find him available in the fourth round … though his pro debut ended quickly when he broke the hamate in his right hand while popping out in his first pro at-bat,” per MLB.com.

After leaving Major League Baseball altogether for a chance in the independent American Association, Hall will be looking to stay healthy first and foremost.
