Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 is projected to make a big splash in the first weekend of the summer box office season.
The film is the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 comedy hit The Devil Wears Prada, which finds formidable fashion maven Miranda Priestly at odds with her new assistant, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) at the offices of New York’s Runway Magazine. The sequel also features the return of Miranda’s first assistant, Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) and Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci), Runway Magazine’s fashion director who takes Andy under his wing.

In The Devil Wears Prada 2, which plays in Thursday previews and opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, Miranda’s magazine has run out of its runway, in the digital media landscape. As such, Miranda brings back Andy to the magazine in a bid to save it, but it must involve her Emily, who has found success as the head of a luxury brand.
Directed by the first Prada film’s director David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada 2 also stars Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Simone Ashley and B.J. Novak.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is projected by Variety to earn anywhere between $75 million to $80 million at the domestic box office this weekend, while Deadline estimate that it will open anywhere from $73 million to $80 million.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is opening in 4,100 North American theaters. While Variety and Deadline are projecting a successful start for The Devil Wears Prada sequel, Box Office Pro is cast a much wider net in its long-range projection for the film earlier this month by pegging an $80 million to $95 million domestic opening weekend.
While The Devil Wears Prada 2 is clearly more about style than any CGI substance, the film still comes with a big price tag. According to Variety, 20th Century Studios spent $100 million on the film’s production before marketing. The trade publication noted the 2006 original had a $40 million production budget before marketing.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will likely have a big opening internationally with a projected $100 million in ticket sales, which combined with its domestic tally would yield $180 million-plus globally.
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael, starring the late music icon’s nephew/Jermaine Jackson’s son, Jaafar, as the adult version of the King of Pop, is projected by to earn anywhere from $45 million to $50 million in its second weekend frame.
Michael surprised most box office prognosticators in its opening frame April 24-26 by earning $97 million domestically and $120 million internationally for a combined $217 million. Most projections going into the Michael’s debut weekend were in the $65 million to $70 million range.
