The screenwriter for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” has shut down rumors that some of the movie, which features a plot in which a high-profile billionaire tries to acquire the fictional Runway fashion magazine, was inspired by billionaire Jeff Bezos and his rumored interest in purchasing Condé Nast.

Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote "The Devil Wears Prada" and its sequel, told Variety the script was already finalized and the film in production when rumors first started swirling that Bezos, who founded Amazon and owns The Washington Post, was interested in Condé Nast, the parent company of Vogue.
The rumors first began in earnest last July, largely driven by gossip that Bezos was looking to buy the publisher as a wedding gift to his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who featured as a digital Vogue cover star the same month (when asked about a potential acquisition, Sánchez later told the New York Times, “I wish!” and then “No.”)
The film stars Justin Theroux as the potential billionaire buyer and Emily Blunt as his high-fashion partner, and early viewers quickly drew the a parallel to Bezos and Sánchez, who have been welcomed into the top tier of the fashion elite by Vogue (the real-life inspiration for Runway) and will co-host the Met Gala on Monday night.
McKenna said the plot depicted in the film, including the coupling, “wasn’t inspired by anything.”

“But, we did say, ‘Whoa,’ when it happened,” McKenna said of the Condé Nast rumors.
The Bezoses were announced in February as the Met Gala's financial sponsors and have since been named as honorary chairs for this year's high-profile event alongside Vogue matriarch Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams. Their inclusion, however, has been met with a wave of backlash from those who question the couple's place among the fashion elite, others who have made them the face of surging anti-wealth sentiment nationwide and others who’ve criticized Bezos’ support of President Donald Trump. The event has been referred to as the “Amazon Prime Gala” or “Bezos Ball" and an activist group called Everyone Hates Elon has been calling for a boycott of the event and posting campaigns around New York City. On Friday, the group reportedly put nearly 300 bottles of fake urine inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the gala’s beneficiary and venue) as a reference to complaints by Amazon workers being forced to skip bathroom breaks. On Sunday, the group projected video interviews with Amazon workers on the Empire State Building and other buildings around the city.

Numerous stars have indicated they’ll skip the gala this year.The mayor of New York City typically attends the event, but newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he’ll pass on attending to focus on “affordability.” High fashion models and regular attendees Cara Delevingne and Bella Hadid drew attention for “liking” a video on Instagram that preemptively called out celebrities for attending the event while wearing “ICE Out” pins in protest of immigration enforcement efforts. "You cannot wear the 'ICE Out' pin to the Jeff Bezos-backed Met Gala. Jeff Bezos is part of the reason we’re in this f**king mess,” the video says. “Jeff Bezos supports this f**king mess.” actress Taraji P. Henson, who attended the gala last year, commented on the same video. "I am so confused by some ppl that are going. I am just like WTF ARE WE DOING!?!?!?!" Other stars rumored to be skipping the event are Zendaya and "Devil Wears Prada 2" star Meryl Streep, who reportedly declined the opportunity to be a co-chair of the event.
Meta billionaire Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla, are rumoured to be attending for the first time this year.
There are no phones or cameras technically allowed inside the Met Gala, and while attendees have been known to break the rule by posting high-profile selfies, there is no press coverage allowed. The red carpet walk, however, is highly publicized. A Met Gala livestream will be broadcast exclusively by Vogue across YouTube, TikTok and Vogue.com, and E! will also offer live coverage on linear TV, E! Online and Peacock.
