In a few days, Ella Langley may score her first No. 1 album with Dandelion, her sophomore full-length. The singer-songwriter broke out with multiple hits from her debut project, Hungover, which dropped in the summer of 2024, but it was “Choosin' Texas,” the lead single from Dandelion, that has turned her into a certified star and a hitmaker.
“Choosin' Texas” became a rare No. 1 for country music on the Billboard Hot 100, where it holds again this week. The cut is, of course, also a leader on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, which operates in the same manner as the Billboard Hot 100, only it focuses entirely on country music. On that roster, Langley’s showing is not only much more impressive, it’s historic.
As of this frame, “Choosin' Texas” has dominated the Hot Country Songs chart for a milestone 20 weeks. 11 singles have topped the tally for that long, and only a handful credit women, as country remains largely a boys club.
As it reaches a landmark 20 weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart, “Choosin' Texas” ties both “What I Want” by Morgan Wallen and Tate McRae and “I Remember Everything,” a collaboration by Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves. Coincidentally, those tracks also happen to feature solo female artists, and no other cuts have stopped at exactly 20 turns in the spotlight.
Just two singles by women have occupied the penthouse on the Hot Country Songs chart for longer streaks. The all-time longest-charting No. 1 remains “Meant to Be,” the unlikely hit by Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha. Her first country win ran the show for an incredible 50 frames between 2017 and 2018. Several years later, American Idol performer Gabby Barrett took “I Hope” to No. 1 and kept it there for just over half a year – 27 weeks in total.
Looking beyond solely female compositions, “Choosin’ Texas” – alongside “What I Want” and “I Remember Everything” – is tied as the ninth-longest-ruling No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs ranking. Smashes by the likes of Shaboozey, Sam Hunt, and Morgan Wallen have so far beaten “Choosin' Texas,” though at this point, there’s no telling how much longer it will remain in charge.
Should “Choosin' Texas” step away from the Hot Country Songs chart’s summit, its closest competitor is another track by Langley. “Be Her,” also featured on Dandelion, holds at No. 2, its all-time high, and it is blocked once again by the musician’s even more popular track.
Langley fills half a dozen spaces on this week’s Hot Country Songs tally. In addition to her No. 1 and No. 2 smashes, “Loving Life Again” advances to No. 11, nearly breaking into the top 10 for the first time. “Dandelion,” the title track from her recently-released album, improves to No. 13, though that is not a new peak, as in the past it has climbed as high as No. 7. “Girl You’re Taking Home” improves and similarly reaches a never-before-seen position of No. 28. Langley closes out the Hot Country Songs – while also sitting in the highest spot – as “Wish I Didn’t Know” reenters the roster at No. 50.
