Purple Rain usually keeps Prince on the Billboard charts, and more often than not these days, it does so in both song and album form. That classic, which is often cited as the best in a catalog filled with soul, R&B, pop, and rock classics, is present once again, but it's not the most exciting story when it comes to the late great artist's performance on the weekly rankings.
Prince sees a track titled "With This Tear" debut on a pair of rosters, and it brings him back to the top 10 on both of them simultaneously.
"With This Tear," released by Prince's estate apparently in recognition of the tenth anniversary of his death, debuts on the R&B Digital Song Sales and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales charts, and it's an instant top 10 smash on both of them. "With This Tear" enters highest on the more specific of the two, where it arrives at No. 6. Over on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tally, which includes the purchases of all R&B, rap, and hip-hop cuts via stores such as iTunes and others, the cut is new at No. 8.
When looking at total career appearances, Prince has performed best on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, where he is now up to 31 wins. He has nabbed 28 on the R&B-specific list.
When focusing entirely on top 10s, the reverse is true. "With This Tear" marks his ninth trip to the highest tier on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales rundown. The recently-shared track – which was written by Prince but originally recorded by Celine Dion – earns the superstar his fourteenth such hit on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
In a bit of coincidence, "With This Tear," which launches in sixth place on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, ties with two other hits as his sixth-highest-rising track. Prince's latest arrival matches both "1999" and "Purple Rain (Piano and a Microphone 1983)," which similarly stalled in the same spot. The original "Purple Rain," credited to Prince and the Revolution, remains his only No. 1 on the R&B register.
"With This Tear" ties one other Prince track on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, though it is neither of the ones that it matches on the R&B-only roster. "With This Tear" joins "Raspberry Beret" at No. 8, and the two jointly claim to be the multi-instrumentalist's seventh-loftiest-peaking cuts.
Prince scores his first debut on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart in a decade, as "With This Tear" arrives. In May of 2016, just under 10 years ago, the roster was inundated with his music following his sudden and tragic death.
Over on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, Prince last earned a new hit less than a year ago. In July 2025, "America" debuted at No. 7 and spent just one frame on the list.
It's not unusual to see "Purple Rain" appear on either of the charts where "With This Tear" debuts this week, though that is not the case at the moment. Instead, that generation-defining composition climbs slightly on the Billboard Global 200, inching from No. 194 to No. 189.
The album of the same name nearly reconquers Billboard's Soundtracks roster, where it dances from No. 3 to No. 2. Only KPop Demon Hunters, which holds at the summit, keeps him from regaining control of the rundown.
