Topline

More than three-quarters of people internationally do not have confidence in President Donald Trump, according to a new poll—and less than half say the U.S. is a reliable partner, with his ratings across Western Europe slightly above where they were during his first term but significantly below former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s.

Key Facts

Just 23% of the 42,151 people surveyed by Pew Research Center across 36 countries say they have confidence in Trump, while 37% said they have an unfavorable view of the U.S. and 50% say the U.S. is not a reliable partner.

Trump’s highest approval rating was in the Philippines, where 68% said they have confidence in Trump and his lowest rating was in the West Bank/East Jerusalem, where 4% said they have confidence.

The share of respondents who see the U.S. as a reliable partner has plummeted in multiple countries since Pew last asked the question, during Biden’s term, dropping from 83% to 31% in Sweden, 83% to 35% in Canada, 62% to 27% in France and 76% to 59% in Japan.

Seven countries rate the U.S. positively, with Israel giving the highest rating (81%).

Trump’s ratings in the U.K., Spain, Germany and France are slightly higher than they were at the end of his first term and about equal to former President George W. Bush’s.

Nearly three-quarters, 74%, of adults internationally disapprove of how Trump is dealing with Iran and 77% disapprove of his handling of tariffs.

Big Number

18%. That’s the median share of respondents in all 36 countries who have confidence in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the only world leader of six Pew asked about who has a lower rating than Trump. Russian President Vladimir Putin had a 31% median rating, Chinese President Xi Jinping (34%), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (35%) and French President Emmanuel Macron (43%).

Key Background

Trump has a 39% approval rating and 59% disapproval rating nationally, according to The New York Times poll tracker. His approval rating is similar to Biden’s 41% at this point during his term, according to Gallup, and on par with Trump’s 41% approval rating at this point during his first term. Trump’s average national approval rating has declined from 41% at the end of February, before the U.S. attacked Iran, and from 52% when he took office. His approval rating dipped quickly in the wake of his so-called Liberation Day tariffs last year, dropping from 48% at the beginning of April to 44% by the end of the month.
