AEW Dynamite Ratings Freefall | Key Points

  • AEW Dynamite viewership has fallen almost 20% since its March 25 surge.
  • AEW Dynamite ratings fell 13% after Darby Allin dethroned MJF for the AEW World Championship the previous week on the April 15, 2026 Dynamite.
  • In addition to Allin’s title win, the disappearance of Ronda Rousey and Toni Storm have hurt interest in AEW.

AEW Dynamite’s temporary surge of momentum has fallen off a cliff and then some.

AEW Dynamite sank to 617,000 viewers for the April 22 broadcast of Dynamite featuring AEW world champion Darby Allin defending AEW’s crown jewel against Tommaso Ciampa. The dip marked the third ratings decline since March 25, with the only increase being for the April 15 broadcast when top star MJF defended the AEW World Championship against Allin in a rare title change on TV. Tonight’s broadcast of Dynamite will feature AEW’s third world title defense in as many weeks as Allin puts the title on the line against longtime friend Brody King.

AEW Dynamite Ratings And Viewership (Last 5 Weeks)

  • March 25, 2026 | 765,000
  • April 1, 2026 | 730,000
  • April 8, 2026 | 654,000
  • April 15, 2026 | 710,000 (Darby Allin vs. MJF for AEW World Title)
  • April 22, 2026 | 617,000

This time one month ago, AEW was flying high with an impressive 765,000 viewers for Dynamite. This after averaging 605,000 viewers on Dynamite in 2025. The number was equally impressive since it improved upon the 730,000 viewers for the AEW Revolution fallout show on March 18, which may help explain AEW’s decline in the month that followed.

The Ronda Rousey Effect

AEW Revolution was one of AEW’s best pay-per-views in history and it featured a memorable surprise appearance from Ronda Rousey, who faced off against top star Toni Storm. Though AEW Revolution was not a top trending search term on Google during a busy Oscars weekend, Ronda Rousey was. Rousey’s faceoff with Storm garnered 725,000 views on YouTube, which blew away every other clip on that show including the Texas Death main event between MJF and Hangman Adam Page, which drew just 289,000 views. Ronda’s appearance clearly led to that Ronda Rousey bump as an inflated audience tuned into Dynamite for the follow-up. The more it became apparent Ronda’s appearance was a one-off, the less casual viewers watched.

Ronda Rousey will do battle with Gina Carano on May 16, 2026 on Netflix. Rousey’s Revolution cameo was done to a) promote that fight b) support Rousey’s BFF Marina Shafir, who faced Toni Storm that night, and c) send a message to WWE and TKO.

"It’s kind of a cool, little bit of a 'f**k you’ to the TKO group," Rousey said of her appearance. "Which is kind of funny because...WWE is on Netflix. But I kind of figured it would be easier to ask for forgiveness instead of permission on this one. Like, I'm promoting your show, it's fine. We didn't advertise it, it's not like we boosted the ratings of it. So it should be fine."

Sadly, Rousey was not the only big star to disappear from AEW. Toni Storm was attacked by a mystery assailant on March 18. This was a storyline cover since Storm, arguably AEW’s biggest star, will be taking significant time off for undisclosed reasons not related to injury. Storm’s absence has caused an already shaky women’s division to crater, and AEW is well on its way to celebrating 50 straight PPVs (in seven years) without ever having a women’s match main event. AEW’s main events are defined by their male world champions. One of the first traditions ever established in AEW was that its men’s world title always goes on last unless there is an unsanctioned or “lights-out” match.

Early returns suggest Darby Allin is the wrong man for that spot.

Darby Allin Is Not A Ratings Draw

AEW Dynamite’s ratings surge coincided with the return of MJF, AEW’s biggest male star. Given MJF’s star power, the uptick in ratings was not a coincidence. Things only got better for AEW’s numbers when MJF dethroned Samoa Joe for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship at AEW World’s End in December 2025.

MJF’s presence rose all boats in AEW. Creativity is not Tony Khan’s strong suit, so he leaned on the cult of personality that is MJF to tell the most basic professional wrestling story of all: Everybody wants the belt.

Swerve Strickland, Kenny Omega, Hangman Adam Page, Brody King, Darby Allin and a host of AEW stars publicly declared their interest in the AEW world title like those old Royal Rumble videos where every entrant vowed to win. This is bare-minimum storytelling. It’s already implied that every active AEW wrestler wants to be world champion.

But the story worked because the champion in question was MJF.

AEW is now trying to replicate this angle with Darby Allin, who—while popular—was seldom pushed at a main event level beforehand. Even when Allin returned from climbing Mount Everest, he was relegated to a midcard feud against Jon Moxley and the Death Riders after Mox’s world title run.

“When you say [Darby’s] the right guy, I completely disagree,” said faulty wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. “The world champion should be the top guy generally but certainly Top 3 or 4 in your company.”

Allin’s world title run always seemed to have an end date given the fluky nature of his win and MJF working diligently to get his belt back. Most expect MJF to embark on his third world title reign at Double or Nothing on May 24.

Nielsen Ratings Data Under Scrutiny Amid Constant Changes

Nielsen’s ratings data, which has changed its format multiple times over the past year, has come under scrutiny with questions of just how legitimate it is amid all these changes. Nielsen’s shift to the Big Data+ methodology led to significant declines in pro wrestling viewership across the board. Things got so bad, The CW spoke out against the new ratings system after NXT powered it to some of its best viewership in years under the old Nielsen system.

“We’ve expressed to Nielsen our deep frustration with the way it handled the process, communication, and methodology behind its Big Data rollout,” said The CW.

“The sudden and substantial discrepancy in WWE NXT viewership reported by Big Data, relative to long-established viewing patterns, is inexplicable and lacks credibility. Further, a comparison with data from all other measurement products (including others from Nielsen itself) exposes a fundamentally flawed methodology in Big Data. We are disappointed by Nielsen’s lack of cooperation, transparency, and accountability with its network partners as we work to resolve this issue.”

Nielsen’s ratings system has since changed, but questions remain about its validity, especially with inflated viewership in the 50+ demo compared to significantly lower numbers under previous ratings systems. Whether or not they are real, the reality is AEW Dynamite’s ratings are once a gain faltering and fans are fleeing in the increasingly temporary Darby Allin Era.
