Topline

The northern lights could be visible from some northern states along the U.S.-Canadian border on Thursday night, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The northern lights could be visible from some states along the U.S.-Canadian border, even though no space weather is expected to impact the aurora.

Key Facts

NOAA issued a Kp index of four out of nine for Thursday night, indicating the northern lights could move further from the north pole and appear brighter with more “motion and formations.”

However, the agency is not forecasting any space weather, such as solar winds, which can make the aurora more visible and vivid for viewers.

Where Could The Aurora Be Visible?

Some states along the U.S.-Canadian border have a small chance to see the northern lights, according to NOAA’s forecast map. These include the northeastern portion of Washington, northern Idaho, northern Montana and North Dakota. The aurora could also be visible from parts of the upper Midwest, including northern Minnesota and the northern-most parts of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Viewers in Alaska have a much higher chance to see the aurora on Thursday, with most of the state falling within the “high” likelihood range, according to NOAA.

What’s the Best Way to View the Northern Lights?

NOAA recommends prospective viewers travel north, towards the magnetic north pole. Viewers should find a vantage point, such as a hill, with a clear view of the sky facing north and far from sources of light pollution. The lights are most active in the hours around midnight—typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

What’s the Best Way to Photograph the Northern Lights?

Photography experts who spoke to National Geographic said modern smartphones can capture decent images of the aurora with the right settings and equipment. Users should remember to switch to night mode and turn off their flash, and shoot in RAW image format if available. Cameras need to be held still for longer periods of time in order to capture enough light for photos of the night sky, so experts also recommend photographers invest in a tripod and timer for their devices.
