Brian May Doubles His Solo Hits With A New Bestseller

"We Will Rock You" Musical Premiere In Stuttgart

Brian May doubles his solo hits on one U.K. chart as "Eternia," his collaboration with Daniel Pemberton from the Masters of the Universe film, debuts. Brian May co-founded the band Queen with singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor in 1970, though the group would not release its self-titled debut album until 1973. In the more than half-century since then, May has continued to perform with the rockers, even long after Mercury's passing, and he remains active in preserving the outfit’s legacy.

May is noted as one of the world's top guitar players, and he is an incredibly busy guy. The legendary musician has released music on his own and even pursued a separate career in science. While May has written and recorded music under his name, he has only racked up a few solo hits. The celebrated musician scores a new win in the United Kingdom this week with a track that’s connected to a box office smash.

Brian May Debuts "Eternia" on Multiple Charts

May debuts the song "Eternia" on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles Sales charts in the U.K. The tune, which was written and recorded for the movie Masters of the Universe – based on the Mattel franchise – opens at No. 72 on the list of the most downloaded tunes in the U.K. on websites like iTunes and at No. 78 on the ranking of the bestselling cuts of any genre and via any format. May joins the film's composer, Daniel Pemberton, and the two jointly collect a bestseller on multiple rosters.

Brian May Doubles His Downloads Chart Wins

May doubles his solo successes on the Official Singles Downloads chart and collects his first new hit in nearly 15 years. In March 2012, May was credited alongside British rapper and singer Dappy on the track "Rockstar." That collaboration worked itself all the way to No. 3.

Brian May Scores His Fifth Solo Sales Hit

May earns his fifth appearance on the Official Singles Sales chart as "Eternia" debuts. He first appeared on the tally in the spring of 2019 with his own "New Horizons," and most recently scored a smash only three years ago with "Starfleet." "Rockstar" with Dappy never appeared on the Official Singles Sales list, and until now, all of May's songs that had cracked the 100-space rundown of the top-selling tunes in the U.K. were credited to the guitarist alone.

"Eternia" Marks a New Low for Brian May

"Eternia" does mark a new career low on both charts when looking only at songs that name May as a soloist. Of course, on the Official Singles Downloads chart, "Rockstar" broke into the top 10, and "Eternia" barely makes it into the top 75.

On the Official Singles Sales roster, "New Horizons," May's first hit, spent one frame at No. 50 before disappearing. That stood as his worst-performing bestseller for more than half a decade, until this week.

Queen Has Scored Many More Wins Than Brian May

As a member of Queen, May has performed significantly better on the two tallies. The group has earned 20 wins on the Official Singles Sales chart and 23 on the downloads roster. Those roundups include multiple top 10s, and in the case of the Official Singles Sales chart, a pair of No. 1s. Both "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Face It Alone" spent one week running that rundown.
