Evanescence Concert In Madrid

Evanescence’s new album Sanctuary is now the band's lowest-peaking traditional studio LP on the Billboard 200, and one of only two to miss the top 10. Some musical acts release a new album every year, year and a half or perhaps every two years. Most artists recognize at this point that spacing projects out by multiple years can be detrimental to their careers, as audiences move on and tastes change quickly.

Evanescence is one of a number of names – especially rock acts – that remains confident enough in its fan base to drop new collections whenever they're ready. Since unleashing its first full-length Fallen in 2003, the group has released just six traditional studio LPs. Sanctuary arrived in early June, more than half a decade after the band's most recent set, The Bitter Truth, and while followers of the Grammy-winning troupe were clearly excited about new material from the hard rock favorites, Sanctuary underperforms like no other project from the band before.

Evanescence Debuts Sanctuary on the Billboard 200

This week, Sanctuary debuts on half a dozen charts published by Billboard, with the most important of that collection being the Billboard 200. That tally ranks the most-consumed EPs and full-lengths, using both sales and streaming data to show what Americans are listening to. Sanctuary arrives at No. 38 with a little more than 21,000 equivalent units shifted, according to Luminate.

Sanctuary Marks a New Low for Evanescence

As Sanctuary debuts on the Billboard 200, it marks a new career low for Evanescence when looking at traditional studio albums. It is one of only two sets to miss the top 10. The Bitter Truth peaked at No. 11, just one space beneath the uppermost tier. Back in 2021, Fallen climbed all the way to No. 3, and the band's next two projects, The Open Door and a self-titled affair, both led the charge. In 2017, Synthesis, which followed Evanescence by half a dozen years, topped out at No. 8.

Only One Release by Evanescence Has Peaked Lower

Since first hitting the Billboard 200 more than two decades ago, Evanescence has seen seven releases make it to the chart. Only one project, a live album titled Anywhere but Home, peaked in a lower position than Sanctuary. That release, which arrived a little more than a year after Fallen turned Evanescence into one of the hottest new names in the music industry, soared all the way to No. 39 – just one space beneath where the group's latest studio album launches this time around.

Sanctuary Performs Better on Other Charts

While Sanctuary is not a major win for Evanescence on the Billboard 200, the project performs significantly better on the other five Billboard charts where it debuts this frame. The title almost conquers the Top Hard Rock Albums tally, but instead opens in second place. Evanescence sees Sanctuary kick off its time within the uppermost tier on the Top Album Sales, Top Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Top Rock & Alternative Albums lists, as it begins its time at Nos. 3, 5, 7 and 8, respectively.

Evanescence Scores Multiple Hit Songs

While Sanctuary underperforms on the Billboard 200 and misses dominating even the Top Hard Rock Albums chart – where Evanescence likely stood the best chance of hitting No. 1 with the project – the full-length has produced multiple hit songs. This week, second single "Who Will You Follow" sits at No. 1 on both the Rock & Alternative Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay charts, and it returns to that position on the Hot Hard Rock Songs tally. On that latter list, Evanescence scores two additional wins as Sanctuary cuts "Tell Me When You've Had Enough" and "Beautiful Lie" enter the ranking of the most-consumed hard rock tracks in the nation at Nos. 4 and 17, respectively.
